3.0 out of 5 stars Good but with irritating repetitions, 11 Aug 2014

I love the Micky Knight series and I'm about to finish this one.

The story is good and the characters very believable so why only 3 starts? Because in this instalment, the endless references to the consequences of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans are a bit irritating. I do understand it was traumatic and the city completely transformed and all that, but I do not need the author to mention every few paragraphs that 'the traffic lights are not working, that the streets are dark, that people have been displaced, that the character hate drivers with Texas plates ('cause they never know where they are & drive slowly), etc..
I got all that the first couple of times it was said, I did not need it rehashed two dozen times each!

One extra star was lost for the multiple uses of 'inchoate' in the few first chapters.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too long & repetitive, 4 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Too long: the story could have been told in fewer pages.
Too repetitive: it's too long because we keep getting the same scenes repeated over & over: Genevieve zoning out, then working at computer with other guys trying to follow, confrontations (always the same) between the characters, then they eat, then she zones out again etc...

Good underlying idea, poor execution.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK story but not that well written, 27 Mar 2014
This is a Dan Brown-ish rip off with a secret religious society full of devious characters and numerous murderers. It has a super dooper hero and a damsel in distress and there is of course a long lost manuscript...

I guess it's generally OK, entertaining in bits but quite silly in parts. It has also numerous errors that a good editor would/should have spotted:
-consistency: on one page: "he travelled in other towns to visit libraries...." two pages later: "he had never ventured more than a few miles outside his village"
-reality: there is no way whatsoever than a 2CV would have managed to move a massive car with bullet proof windows etc..out of harm's way and still be able to be driven. The 2CV would have been in the shape of an accordeon and the massive car still in exactly the same place.

2.0 out of 5 stars Clunky style and shallow characters, 9 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book was a big disappointment for me. The writing style is awkward and makes it difficult to read, I had to will myself to go on reading after the first few (very short) chapters. About a third into the story, the flow improved and I started to enjoy it a bit. Then towards the end, it becomes clunky again and that combined with poor characterisation and a few improbabilities here and there makes this a rather poor book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic templar adventure, 4 Oct 2013

This review is from: Templar (Hardcover)
This is a really good book that will plunge you into a vivid 12th Paris! The story is fast-paced and an inventive take on what happened to the treasure of the Temple. The illustrators have a really nice style and bring to life this epic story.

This book builds upon careful research to deliver a well written and well illustrated entertaining story. I say genius!

Quick summary: Martin and his knight templar mates are stationed in the order's temple just outside the walls of Paris. One evening they defy the curfew, change into civilian garb and go into town for a bit of evening fun. That very same night the destiny of the 15,000 or so knight templars of France is forever changed by the king and his cunning adviser Guillaume de Nogaret...

5.0 out of 5 stars Girlie fun, 29 Sep 2013
This is the first volume of girlie series Julie, Claire, Cecile et les autres. It's a series of vignettes about a bunch of girls having fun, being a bit dim and talking about boys!

If you want something to read in French but don't want anything too complex, this comic book is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Volume 9 in a great spy series, 29 Sep 2013
This review is from: Alpha, Tome 9 : Scala (Album)
This volume continues the adventures of CIA agent Alpha and his team. It's well drawn and it's full of action as usual.
Entertaining way to practice your French!

1.0 out of 5 stars Average guide USELESS MAP!, 30 May 2013
I bought this because it combined a guide and a map, which was perfect for our five days in Iceland.

The guide is OK, no more.

The map is OUTDATED and MISLEADING!!!!!! We ended up using the Lonely Planet maps more, which says a lot. Missing roads (probably built since the author last bothered to actually check Iceland), wrong places for sights, junctions not where they actually are (after a landmark, not before as indicated, just one example!!!).

Stay clear and buy a more recent guide and a proper, newer map if you intend to drive!

1.0 out of 5 stars piece of crap, 24 Mar 2013
I have yet again missed out on a program I wanted to see because this recorder recorded the wrong channel.
It also stops what you are watching when it starts recording & you cannot go back to the point where you were.
it records repeats on series. The image quality is soso on certain recorded channels (at random!)
AVOID! this has massive firmware issues. Not worth your money.

Complete waste of money! This is full of general information that you can find yourself for free elsewhere. Absolutely no practical or detailed info.

So rubbish, useless book, don't buy!
