4.0 out of 5 stars A Suprising Improvement From The Dismal First Film, 20 Jun. 2007
Fantastic Four was to be far, one of the biggest letdowns of 2005, when the news for the sequel was announced I cringed. Then the trailer came along and it blew me away and I was sucked into seeing the sequel. I was pleasantly suprised as it to be frank was very impressive and better than the disapointing Spiderman 3.

However, it is not perfect. Jessica Alba and Ioan Gruffud are dismal and bland. Julian McMahon's Dr Doom is a waste of time and Surfer and Galactus screen time and frankly his acting is still camp and rubbish. The script still needs to be improved as it's still the same corny dialogue from the first movie. Finally, Galactus did look impressive but it may have been nice to make him a bit more impressive than a cloud, also he wasnt used that much.

The Silver Surfer is superb, you cannot take your eyes off of him, children will pretend to be him, teenagers will think he looks awesome and adults will be amazed by the special effects. Lawrence Fishbourne voices him as a cool, creepy being with a heart aswell. Without him the movie would've failed, he acts terrifically with you debating his innocence throughout the movie. To be fair to Alba, their scene is rather effective, bringing out humanisation in him.

Evans and Chiklis steal all the scenes were the surfer isnt present, Evans using his cheeky acting skills bringing sympathy and emotion to the character unlike the first movie. Chiklis isn't as good as what he was in the first movie as his character seems to whine at times in this movie however he still brings great relationship with Evans.

Visually, its faultless, the surfer moves glides and surfs with fantastic realisticness. Galactus looks superb, CGI at its greatest level. The visuals are much better than the first movie and generally every level is twice as good as the first movie, giving it twice the mark, from the first movie's 2 stars, to the seconds 4 stars. Bring on Fantastic Four 3.

4.0 out of 5 stars Whitaker's film from start to finish!, 9 Mar. 2007
Imagine yourself in forest Whitaker's shoes trying to play one of the most brutal dictators since Hitler, imagine the pressure. Did he do it well? Well his oscar was well and truly deserved because The Last King Of Scotland is Whitaker's movie as he steals every scene.

Based on the (In My Opinion) average book that focuses on Doctor Garrigan (a over shadowed James McAvoy) travelling to Uganda and working as Idi Amin's (Whitaker) personal physician side by side the man taking out all these brutal actions. A hell of a plot that keeps the pace brilliantly from start to finish with a hell of a script.

The scenery in The Last King Of Scotland is tremendous, every image of Uganda is beautiful and captures it in fantastic shots that make you fall in love with the country as soon as he lands in the country. Every cultural aspect of Uganda is beautifully portrayed making even the harshest of scenes look stunning.

So, the problems? McAvoy to me just tries to shine in the film but unfortunately fails due to Whitaker stealing as I said before every single scene making him seem average in a way. Also another flaw of the film is the ending which I shall not spoil but I will say it seems a little too unbelievable even though the whole film is shcoking.

A fantastic start to 2007, worth a look!

Congratulations Whitaker!

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Film!!!, 30 Jan. 2007
This review is from: Little Children [DVD] (DVD)
I saw this film because I'd heard that Kate Winslet's performance was worth an admission ticket on its own, the film gave me so much more, its moving, disturbing and funny all at once with a great supporting actor aswell.

Little Children centers on a group of young marrieds, whose lives intersect on the playgrounds, town pools and streets of their small community in surprising and potentially dangerous ways. Also an ex-paedophile has just moved in on the street.

The main storyline in Little Children that is my favourite is the ex-paedophile story, with his struggle to deal with all the hat surrounding him whilst his mother trys to stick up for him, Jackie Earle Haley is superb as the confused Ronny who will do anything for his mother. This storyline is fantastic and I feel it isnt used enough as Winslet & Wilson's story dominates the screen. Which even though Winslet exceeds in, performing her heart out, Wilson lacks the energy factor and seemsovershadowed by his cast members.

Little Children has extreme moments of powerfulness yet scenes of pointlessness, however I wish Winslet the best of luck at the oscars and maybe Little Children might earn a couple of other nods too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Feet!!!!!! Animation Of The Year & Maybe Ever!, 3 Dec. 2006
This review is from: Happy Feet [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
A film about dancing and singing penguins who find their soul mate through their heart song and a penguin is born who can't sing but can half tap dance. It's probably the most simple yet fantastic plot line a writer could think of. So did the film have the factors to match up? Of course it did but it suprises you as the film wasn't what I was expecting , however it exceeded my expectations and made perhaps one of the best films of the year.

Voice-overs can sometimes be hard to crack with Chicken Little mastering that but failing in nearly all other factors, Valiant was a classic case of wrong voice-overs with Ewan McGregor doing an awful job of the bird himself. Luckily Happy feet doesnt go down this street with all the voice-overs suiting their character emmensely well and suprise you as some can sing well, the only perhaps weak link is Nicole Kidman as Norma Jean, Mumbles's mum.

The animation visuals in this film are dazzling, managing to cross animation and live visuals well without making it seem green screen, Happy Feet makes Cars look like Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The feathers seem to have every detail done with ultimate care, every detail on the penguins and the antarctic paradise are brilliant and theres hardly a fault on any of them.

The biggest winner of the film is the message that Happy Feet sends out, showing the penguins in peril due to global warming, antarctic fishing and littering send you that guilty feeling shivering down your spine, never before has an animation film sent out such a sophisticated message whilst still delighting children and adults alike. Nowadays animation films that have that unique element are worth every penny of your money and Happy feet is simply nothing you will ever see in your life. I shall be buying the DVD and shall watch it again and again with a smile on my face, even if the film sends out a strong message, it still manages to take that crucial first word of the title and give you that same feeling.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars Really. Garfield 2 certainly entertains but doesn't live up to the classic first one., 20 Oct. 2006
So come on everyone knows in terms of film quality Garfield isn't very good. However if you watch the first two films in the right view you will love them. Garfield 2 isn't quite the laughter and classic as Garfield 1 was but it still gives you that chuckle the whole way through.

Jon Arbuckle (Meyer) travels to the United Kingdom, and he brings his cat, Garfield (voiced by Murray), along for the trip. A case of mistaken cat identity finds Garfield ruling over a castle, but his reign is soon jeopardized by the nefarious Lord Dargis (Connolly), who has designs on the estate.

So yes this time Garfield, Odie & about a million other animals are in England, meeting Royal guards, the Queen herself and lots of other minor characters, the plot isn't as strong as the first ones and at times is dippens, for example the millions of animals around just tend to annoy you with the "who voices who" game, however Odie still is legendary and when he wears the police hat you've got to laugh.

Acting again mediocre (but who cares), Bill Murray once again plays the sarcastic toned cat with absolute hilarity so everything the first film had in this category is pretty much sameish.

Basically if you liked the first one you're bound to love this and if you didnt like the first film then you shouldn't even bother seeing the film becuase its frankly the same old Garfield all over again and for Garfield fans proves a winner but doesnt meet up to the standards of Garfield number 1.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disapointing Yet Still Good, 4 Oct. 2006
This review is from: Stormbreaker [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
The one thing that I like about the Alex Rider Books is that even though they are for children they are mature and serious and really have you caring and hating the characters, in my eyes the film had to keep this intact for me to say it is an amazing film. It didnt. Instead it gave us a bit of a joke in some ways yet some factors of this film left me praising it yet some left me hating it.

Based on the Novel of Anthony Horowitz, Stormbreaker. It's About a boy named Alex Rider who finds out that he has more Adventure in his life. When his guardian, Ian Rider (Ewan McGregor) dies in suspicious circumstances, fourteen year old Alex Rider finds his world turned upside down. Within days he's gone from schoolboy to super spy. Forcibly recruited into MI6, Alex has to take part in grueling SAS training exercises, then, armed with his own special gadgets, he's off on his first mission. But Alex soon finds himself in mortal danger. It looks as if his first assignment may well be his last. The film includes as many British & A Few American stars as a Harry Potter film does children.

The acting is very mediocre as the only good performances are from Sophie Okonedo and Missi Pyle. Alex Pettyfer as Alex Rider is poor and you feel you have to cringe at some of his lines. Alicia Silverstone is OK but just seems to be calling for Alex all the time. As for the others they aren't really up to the high standard as Okonedo and Pyle but still deliver slightly.

The good things about this film is that it is pure fun and if you see this film with that in your mind you'll enjoy it but they needed to take the film seriously to achieve a brilliant film. However tension is made, scary bits (for children) are half met and a pure bit of fun for the little uns is met, however if you are expecting a film of the year then dont buy it but for now lets see what "Point Blanc" brings us!

4.0 out of 5 stars Even Though Its Disapointing Cars Manages To Make It Through Safely, 23 Aug. 2006
This review is from: Cars [DVD] (2006) (DVD)
So Disney Pixar give it another crack with a movie on the life of one of the worlds most essential item today, The Car. Which is a fantastic idea as we have explored lots of different worlds from Pixar and this is one of the many few that were left.

Cars Is the saga of Lightning McQueen, a hot-shot animated stock-car voiced by actor Owen Wilson. In route to a big race, the cocky McQueen gets waylaid in Radiator Springs, where he finds the true meaning of friendship and family.

The main problem with Cars is that for a kids film Pixar are running a bit to over the top with the running times. With it being at a whooping 121 min and it shows aswell with at times the ride becoming slow. It doesn't have to be this way either there are many scenes in the film which could be cut.

Th good points about Cars is that its visually faultless the Cars shine and sparkle, the movement is breath-taking in the race scenes. Director John Lasseter manages to produce no faults with the way the cars live, making anything a human can do a car can do too a very key factor which makes Cars so clever.

Also another good point is the characters which are so full of well character, but the one that stands out from all the rest is the hilarious Mater a rust old tow truck which is the worlds best abckwards driver. He provides a belly full of laughs but has the seriousness and emotion which funny characters sometimes lack.

So overall Cars is a winner but Disney do disapoint slightly but hey, so did Dreamworks with Shark Tale.

2.0 out of 5 stars Urgh Paris Hilton In A Movie, 11 Aug. 2006
This review is from: House Of Wax [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
I'll make this review a short one because theres nothing much to say about this film than what a stinker!

Acting wise the film dips, Paris Hilton is awful, Chad Michael Murray is also awful and Elisha Cuthbert is the only well averaqge actress in this movie. Yes ok they bold well together to produce a half convincing group of teenagers but actign wise this film is a no-go.

The film does produce some frights but they are only really make you jump frights and a couple of gruesome ones too but I have seen scarier and the frights were also kinda predictable so it never really came as a shock. The deaths were a bit extreme and come on death through a pole in the head its hardly imaginative si it.

So apart from seeing Paris Hilton dieing and being a bit spooked this film isn't worth it at all.

P.S Guys Paris Hilton does strip in this movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warning! Dumping A Super Hero Can Seriously Damage Your Health!, 11 Aug. 2006
I am so shocked at the fact that the idea of a guy dumping a superhero and her getting back at him has not crossed anyones mind as a film for this long. What a great idea and its pulled off for these guys. Nearly.

The films plot is about when regular average Joe Matt starts dating unknown superhero Jenny Johnson (G-Girl) and starts getting annoyed by her high maintanance habits, he decides to brake it off with her untill he realises that everything isn't going to be all nice and dandy now hes doen that.

Uma Thurman puts in an excellent performance as the scorned superhero who plays some hilarious revenge on Matt by throwing a shark into teh room hes in and writing dick on his forehead before a major job conference. Ok her performance goes a little over the top at times but hey its a slapstick movie. Luke Wilson is the best thing in this movie considering in other movies he produces a stinker, his facial expressions and reactions to his "punishments" from the delightful G-Girl are priceless and made me chuckle in the cinema. Other performances from Anna Faris and Eddie Izzard are good but forgettable.

The special effects team have done a good job with the film except perhaps the CGI shark which could have been better, however dealing with G-Girl and how she flys and puts out fires are top notch.

The script is funny because the lines Uma Thurman's character has to stay are so run for your life men it brings tears of hilarity to your eyes.

The only criticism is some of the sex jokes are a bit OTT and carry on for too long and may even question the 12A certificate for this movie. Also there is a point in the movie where it becomes a bit boring and your just begging Matt to break it off so the laughing can start.

Overall My Super Ex-Girlfriend is a winner but may leave some people undecided because for some it may be funny but for some it may be damn right stupid.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hammy Is The New Donkey!!!!!Yet Less Smart, 20 July 2006
Shark Tale was not bad, Madagascar scraped yet got 4 stars, Over The Hedge is better than both and nearly becomes as good as Shrek.

The plot is about RJ the racoon who steals lots of food off of a bear and the bear tells him if he doesnt return it within a week he will basically end the happy chappy life of RJ. So as Verne and the gang wake up to find out that all their food is gone and that all their forest has become a a housing estate. Excellent for RJ who uses the gang to get the food back.

First off Hammy is hilarious and he has you laughing at how hyper this little squirrel is, especially when he does his rabbit squirrel bit which could leave any person, any age in stiches. the other characters were good too but forgettable and not very interesting apart from the cat who also is another funny character.

Animation as expected was dazzling but there is hardly an animation film that isnt these days, the humans and the animals looked very real except I wasnt so sure that Hammy was actually a squirrel.

I can't say much more than this is a great fun-filled movie to go and see, better than Shark Tale & Madagascar so its good to see that Dreamworks can deliver the greatness without the green ogre.
