4.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE FROM A SMALL UNIT., 7 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have only had this player for a few days, but I am extremely impressed with it's all-round performance. It was hard to get any independent reviews of this player, so i took a bit of a risk in going for it rather than more expensive players with similar specifications. I've bought Yamaha in the past and trusted their consistent performance in the hi-fi market. They have not let me down with this product. I wanted a good sounding radio / CD / Ipod player for my kitchen where I spend a lot of time cooking, chatting etc. I also have a partner who has strong views on size of audio equipment, wires and looks (this often seems to accompany a general lack of interest in music!) The most important element for me was the quality of the sound. I was not buying a hi-fi separate system, but an all-in-one unit, so it is unfair to make comparisons with anything other than similar machines. I had considered various Roberts systems, but I always find their sound a bit boomy and lacking precision, though they are good. The Ruark was beyond my price range. This Yamaha delivers outstanding sound quality for its size and price. It allows modifications to highs, treble and bass so you can tune the sound to your preference. On a wide range of very different types of music (opera, symphonic, chamber, single instrument, jazz, blues and soul) this unit delivers exceptional quality.
The reproduction of Ipod music is really outstanding. I transfer music in high quality anyway, but my Ipod has never sounded this good, with direct digital transfer of the signal. It really is as good as straight from the CD. I have been using a good Klipsch dock, but this Yamaha gives significantly better audio reproduction. The radio offers both FM and DAB/DAB+, though the supplied aerial, though adequate, probably needs replacing with a better quality one (easy to do). The controls are staightforward and the remote (small and some may feel a bit flimsy, though it's fine for me) can control some elements of the ipod.
The only reason I'm giving four rather than five stars is for the following niggles (none of which I feel are serious): DAB reception is not perfect in my area, even with an improved aerial, but I feel this is in large part due to the inadequacies of the current DAB signal arrangements. When (if) DAB+ arrives, things should improve. I can get perfectly good DAB reception, but I have to move the aerial if I switch between stations. FM is fine. The readout for DAB is on the top of the unit, not on the front, so you have to go over and read it, and the information is limited. The CD does not tell you which track is playing until you switch to the next track, which can be irritating. The remote has a limited range. As I said, these are niggles and the main aspects of this player - sound, functions and looks, are outstanding for the price. I would not hesitate in recommending this unit to anyone looking for a versatile all-in-one performer with the capacity for room filling sound that maintains excellence of sound reproduction at all volumes.

Does exactly what it says it will do. The only slight drawback is the length of the tubes that may not be quite long enough for some tasks, but a good product.

14 discs covering the huge range of Richter's mastery of the piano, from concertos to sonatas, accompanist and .. well, just about anything that has been composed for the piano. As an overview of his astonishing accomplishments on the piano, this is outstanding.

If you want 40 feet of blue tinged snowscape, then this is it. It's thin, but perfectly adequate for the job of covering a large area of continuous snowscape, and it's plasicised so should last.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good intro to Dianne Reeves., 10 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Four CD's at a very good price is a good deal, and there is some excellent material here. There is not a lot of information on each CD, so if you want details of musicians etc. - it ain't here. However, these are four very good records showcasing Reeves terrific voice across a range of material. I prefer her out and out jazz singing, and some of this is abit too MOR for me, but the best is terrific and her voice is a wonderful thing. Wish she would use it on more consistently challenging material, though.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does the trick, with some preparation., 10 Dec 2012

The layers of the material are very thin, so to get an effective snow appearance, you either have to use a lot of layers, or lay a white foundation, using old sheeting or similar. That done, it can look pretty good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only for light use, 11 Nov 2012
I've had two of these saws (the second was agift - I wouldn't have bought it) and used them mainly for DIY sawing and for fire-logs. The saw is not accurate since it vibrates a lot, so not suitable for tight measurements. It's main weakness is the flimsy construction of the blade-holder, which, on both my machines, gave way and sheared off after a year or so's use. Potentially dangerous and not a well-made product. For very simple tasks may be okay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elling right on track, 21 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In my opinion this is Kurt Elling's best studio recording since 'Nightmoves' (though there is nothing here as sublime as 'The Waking', a song I play almost daily and never tire of), though it seems to have split his fan base. It's true that a jazz take on a commercial 'pop' tune can sometimes destroy the very element that gave the original song its power - usually melody, since there is rarely much musical complexity - but Elling avoids this here, with the possible exception of 'You Send Me'. 'Come Fly With Me' becomes a quite different song from the one we are familiar with and repays several listenings. 'On Broadway' is magnificent and becomes a really moving examination of the destructive effects of the pursuit of stardom, rather than the usual 'I'll make it somehow' paen to self-motivation. There are none of the irritating vocal 'scat' repetitions that mar his earlier records - the songs are reinterpreted, but they take centre stage rather than Elling's own vocal prowess, and new meanings are uncovered. 'American Tune' is left as Paul Simon first recorded it, and it is beautifully sung, but actually I would have liked a more exploratory take on this. These are superbly sung examinations of many songs, some of which would not ordinarily get a serious look-in in many jazz singer's repertoire, and a different side to the songs frequently emerges. The musicianship is outstanding, as ever, but the great Laurence Hobgood needs special mention as does the fantastic percussion of Kendrick Scott - he really gives a punch to so many tracks. I can see this is not to everyone's taste, but for me it's a knock-out - that great voice is at the service of some - at first sight unlikely - songs, and reveals their sometimes darker, at times very lighthearted, qualities, aided by a fantastic group of musicians. What's not to like?

The retaining screw generally fails to retain and the continual re-screwing destroys the heads. Poor quality. I needed to use ten and quickly decided to bin these and get some more expensive ones instead. Just don't bother with these.

5.0 out of 5 stars A film to separate those with some kind of functioning brain and those without, 25 Feb 2012
This is a real gem of a movie. One of the best American independents from the last twenty years, beautifully acted and directed and one of the best film scripts ever - the scene where a seduction is attempted through describing types of wine is just heartbreakingly truthful, particularly since the male character doesn't have the courage to respond, even though he yearns for love. The characterisation is brilliant, the dialogue bristling with both emotional truth and real wit and some very funny set-pieces. If you've not yet seen this film, then you are missing one of the medium's real joys. If you have, then you will, like me, have seen it many times and enjoyed it just as much each time. This is a film about loss, the need for love and the hopelessness this often provokes, treated with insight, truth and no sentimentality at all. The negative reviews of this film are simply baffling. It's difficult to imagine the narrow parameters that some people must live their lives by. If you have a taste for films that are literate, subtle and shot through with emotional truth, watch this. If you like it, and you will be only half alive if you don't, check back to his ealrier films, 'About Schmidt' and the brilliant 'Election' (the only high school movie really worth watching, since it uses the high school more as a metaphor for both American politics and culture generally). This should be in every film lovers collection.
