1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 2 Feb. 2016

Remarkably dull appearance. The setting is curved, which detracts from the appearance. Not worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - but be careful, 2 Feb. 2016

This is a highly entertaining approach to some everyday situations which would not normally be thought scientific, treated in a practical manner and showing the principles involved.. Thoroughly recommended. However, BEWARE: this is the American edition of "How to Dunk a Doughnut"; there is no warning that the contents are identical.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent collection of cartoons, 31 July 2015

This is an excellent collection of cartoons. All praise to the GWR for reviving artistic patronage by commissioning this book. Of course, some subjects are wittier than others, but overall it is very amusing and a fitting reminder of both artist and patron.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quality product, 11 April 2015

This drive is built substantially, and should therefore be more durable than cheaper models - only extended use will tell, but initial experience is good. Other than that, it operates quietly and quickly. In terms of value for money, it meets my requirements - principally because I am very frustrated by the continued problems experienced when using cheaper drives, both internal and external.

Alarms and Excursions and Other Transports Transfixed by Emett
Alarms and Excursions and Other Transports Transfixed by Emett
by Rowland Emett
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars and this provides several beautiful subjects. Highly recommended to anybody who enjoys Emett's ..., 8 Dec. 2014
This is Emett's eccentric viewpoint on the modes of transport which do not rely on the "servicable vapour". Several cartoons are enlivened by an accompanying sketch showing the idea behind it - the Tram Request Stop is a superb example. WWII and rationing provoke suitable satires, and in spite of the introductory avowal there are trains in the background of some drawings. Tram services were being withdrawn around the time of these cartoons, and this provides several beautiful subjects.

Highly recommended to anybody who enjoys Emett's approach to transport of all kinds.

A neat robust instrument, with a good range of measurement options. My only quibble is with the time interval before it switches off - this could be adjustable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scholarship for the layman, 12 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a superb review of the latest findings from the Stonehenge region (with the emphasis on "region"), together with an interpretation of these findings, all expressed as a technical report but with every term explained for those unfamiliar with the language. Extremely readable, with interspersed anecdotes and personal experiences and, where appropriate, conflicting views of the evidence.

The early morning milk train : the cream of Emett railway drawings
by Rowland (1906-) Emett
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A delight for Emett enthusiasts, 12 April 2014

A wonderful collection of railway-related drawings and line drawings. Many show event-related conditions, notably the Second World War, where some knowledge is helpful in decoding the detail. Emett's cows are a delight.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a robust product, 8 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This pump contains complex and fragile valves which, from the description in the maintenance kit, seem designed to wear out and so need to be replaced frequently. Mine lasted a season. The mounts for the vibrating pump arms wore suddenly, causing the magnets to rub against the stator and filling the interior with fine dust which was virtually impossible to remove and which blocked the operation of the valves. A poor design.

The Mysteries of Abu Simbel: Ramesses II and the Temples of the Rising Sun
The Mysteries of Abu Simbel: Ramesses II and the Temples of the Rising Sun
by Zahi A. Hawass
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.95

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what it seems, 8 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an odd book, with a misleading title. Its introduction states that it is the official guidebook to the Abu Simbel monument, but it contains lengthy section on various sections of Egyptian history, an apparently irrevelant section on Nubian Temples Abroad, a description of the Son et Lumiere performance at Abu Simbel, all in addition to a comprehensive guidebook to the monument. It also deals with the enormous engineering effort which was undertaken to save the monument from the rising waters of Lake Nasser, but this seems skimped and lacking in information, and does not do the UNESCO-funded scheme justice. (After all, had it not been for the scheme, there would be no need for a guidebook!)

The section intended as a guidebook seems excellent, although there is a lot to wade through (67 pages) before arriving at this section; as a guide to relevant Egyptian history, particularly Ramesses II, it is good. The photographs are excellent and evocative, the drawings and maps add to the information.

However, this book seems to fail in its objectives, as it is too bulky and expensive to be a guidebook, and it might be better titled "A Guide to Abu Simbel and its History".
