5.0 out of 5 stars Star Wars meets Marvel's Avengers, 19 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Yeah, best way to imagine this book is Star Wars meets Marvel's Avengers.
Take the epic space battles of star wars but throw away the Jedi's light-sabres and instead give them the ability to throw bolts of lightning like Thor, the strength of the Incredible Hulk, and the martial arts of Black Widow and you're halfway there.
It probably sounds a little over the top, and it is (took a little getting used to magic and spaceships being together, let alone people using magic to blow up spaceships), but after you get around that it was pretty good action story. The violence though is fantasy level, nothing major (again think stars wars).

Basic story is that there's an intergalactic war between a democracy called the Planetary Union, and a warrior society called the Salyarian Empire. But instead of being outright good vs evil, its more shades of grey vs other shades of grey. The democracy are both good and noble, but corrupt and incompetent in equal measures, while the Salyarians, although complete nutcases, actually have a decent reason for invading and their long-term ambitions are actually much more selfless than the Union's. Have to say I really liked the fact that several chapters showed the war from the `bad guys' point of view, it made it hard not to sympathise with them a little. The twist at the end was awesome.

Negatives? The language in the prologue was a little flowery for my taste, but the purple prose dies anyway by quickly after that. It's also a little on the long side, but because of the action and the humour (Omni and Aven especially) it flows by pretty quickly.

My guess is that Star Wars and Star Trek fans will get the most out of this, but given its basically a fantasy adventure only with spaceships instead of boats, I think fantasy readers may like it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truely great sci-fi, 14 Jun 2012
Matrix 1 is one of the best imaginative series out there, the idea's fresh and the acting, direction and special effects were all first class. Matrix 1 and 2 arn't as good in story, but they have fantastic over the top battles you normally don't see overside of a anime.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome, 30 May 2012
These are both realy good movies. Great Sci fi flicks with lots of action and good special effects. Pitch black is horror with people getting picked off by monsters, while Chronicals is more action with a war - sadly no space battles.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, 30 May 2012
This review is from: Halo: The Flood (Paperback)
I loved the game, and this follows it really closesly, but at times the action is too repetative, with the same descriptions of Master Cheif shooting enemy after enemy after enemy. I get the feeling he played the game and wrote down what he saw on screen to the letter at times. The dialogue isn't that great, but it does develope many of the characters beyond the game, and several new book only characters were quite interesting. I think this is a good book for fans, but your average Sci-fi fan may find it wanting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as good as the show, 30 May 2012
So I got this after watching the tv show and its every bit as good. The characters and dialogue were well written and the story's interesting. Nowhere near as much sex and violence as the show.
