As a poor piper I can still appreciate elegance and talent. Tightly performed and a pleasure to listen tui to. Tunes are old and new. The kind of thing that could lead the smallpipes resurgence . Worth every penny of your money.

fantastic disc. Extremely listenable and to my ear at least impeccably played. A good variety of tunes played with style and joy. This is a piper I would certainly like to hear a lot more from.
For me this was a blind purchase, I had no idea what I was getting. I was not disappointed!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfyingly ridiculous., 13 Dec. 2013

Absolutely mad, but would certainly work if we were still in the Edwardian era. Wouldn't it be great if gentlemen carried canes and wore boaters. it would of course, be much clearer who was a baddie then. Excellent read, especially if you are into martial arts, fun if you are not. Lots of excellent pictures.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tough going, 13 Dec. 2013

Don't expect this to be a quick fix or learn! It is tough going relating the page to the guitar. Illustrations ar not it's strong suit and trying to express the concepts and ideas solely through music manuscript does not work well.

A really good DVD springing from a highly intriguing idea. take a building condemned to demolition by fire and fill it with musicians for a day and film it all. I love the genre. There is a feel to this that seems to be absent from other live performance DVD's. I definitely plan to track down more of these. Maybe somebody should do this in the UK?

Loades is the go to man for sensible, understandable and above all accurate background on weaponry. The text is readable as opposed to being over researched and too scholarly. Illustrations are relevant and good. His style is helpfull and portrays his passion for the subject. The acknowledged expert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hopkirk at his best., 13 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Another excellent book by Hopkirk. Ties in superbly with his other publications on 'The Great Game'. He is definitely on the scholarly side of writing but still produces a good readable book. Well annotated with references etc. He opens up the world of Central Asia in a time now gone, much of what he has to say will take the new reader on this topic by surprise, it is a tale of great adventure and considerable danger. Such journeys must only be undertaken by thorough going upright gentlemen who understand the art of survival against all odds.
Not a classic thriller but worth the time and effort. It will even leave you with the feeling that you have learned something. I definitely enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good level of scholarship, 13 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A well laid out and illustrated book with the emphasis, rightly, on history. Even covers the region around the Meiji restoration, which is often glossed over in martial type history books. The level of scholarship is excellent and, yet, is still highly readable. A good value book which covers everything you need to know, unless you're a complete anorak. Worth buying and worth reading.

As ever you get a high degree of scholarship from Hopkirk but still easy to read. Hopkirk displays excellent command of his extensive research and sources. He presents his information in an easily accessible form which would still satisfy most serious scholars. He has managed to retain a grip of the excitement of the times and the glory of the settings. He leaves no stone unturned and no detail unchecked. Well worth the effort.
