1.0 out of 5 stars Wrongly advertised, doesn't work, 6 Jun 2014

This review is from: Kiwi Pro Slice Peeler (Misc.)
I ordered two things at once: the zig-zag bladed peeler and the Papaya Salad knife. When the order arrived, it consisted of two identical knives rather than separate and customised tools. I thought fair enough as long as they work well, but they don't: instead of the neat 2mm-wide shreds of fruit shown on the packaging, an over-wide aperture generates a succession of thick, corrugated slices much like fruity McCoy's crisps. I can do a better job with a straight-bladed knife. Avoid.

1.0 out of 5 stars I really must stop buying films based on reviews, 20 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'd read the book, enjoyed it, and was looking forward to this adaptation.

Unfortunately the film has simplified many elements, omitted several others, and in the process created a character (this story is really all about just one character) who is not as extremely unpleasant as the book, is less interesting, and is far less watchable than I'd hoped.

Actions and attitudes described in the book shocked, but this merely shows a dislikeable man of whom the viewer disapproves. By making him less vivid, less interest is generated in him.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor. Very very poor., 2 Jan 2014
This was a dreadful film.

Badly acted, poorly scripted, with random and jarring lurches from scenes which just-about progressed the story to inept and tedious asides which vainly attempted either to inject comic relief, flesh out a background universe or both, but succeeded only in distracting and irritating the viewer.

Add to this an excessive reliance on poorly executed CGI effects and several huge holes in the paper-thin plot, and it makes for a truly wasted couple of hours.

I am truly sorry to have contributed to its global takings by buying it unseen, and very much hope that it doesn't make enough money to cause a 3rd instalment to be produced.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utterly lacking in imagination or charm, 2 Jan 2014
This review is from: Despicable Me 2 [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
I really liked the first film, but found the sequel lacked any of the supervillain in-jokes which made both DM1 and The Incredibles so joyful.

Added to this, the soft side of Gru was gradually revealed in #1, but had to be taken as a given in the sequel. These factors combined in such a way that the plot never really took off, there was little character development and negligible excitement or amusement.

This was the 2nd worst film I received this Christmas (don't even get me started on Percy #'~@"%g Jackson and the Ocean of Boredom & Poor Special Effects).

1.0 out of 5 stars Utterly user-unfriendly, 4 Oct 2013

I've had it several days and it is only just working.
The instructions are virtually worthless, assuming a degree in electrical engineering. Once these have been navigated, the product itself seems to lack many of the features (such as different audio modes [drama, action, sports, for TV viewing, etc.]) which I was used to on my last system. Pretty disappointing really.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just awful, 19 Oct 2011
There are so many things wrong with this dreadful, unimaginative book that I barely know where to start, but here goes:

The characters are woefully thin, making any empathy with them impossible. There are constant attempts to impress the reader with pointless materialistic references to how new, shiny and expensive things are, and the plot is risible.

However, by far the most irritating aspect is the entirely american vocabulary used by supposedly british characters. This occurs throughout, and is frequently applied to slang expressions (a woman is described as a "cooze" at one point - a word only heard in the UK when watching the Sopranos). The most toe-curling example is the main character's mental calculation of the cost of something (see pointless materialism, above) which he thinks of in "bucks," as no Londoner has ever done in recorded history.

Note to Messrs Patterson & Pearson: if you can't be bothered to reflect even the basic vernacular of a foreign country, please stick to US-based plots in future.
