5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Every Sci-Fi Fan! A Truly Classic Show., 11 Sep 2011
There are very few TV shows that can match THE TWILIGHT ZONE in terms of enjoyablity, re-watchability, influence and pure freakin' awesomeness! Each episode tells a different story and they all have brilliant characters and more twists and turns than a rollercoaster. Every single one, without fail. Despite the episodes growing to an hour in length (rather than previously being just shy of 30 minutes each), this volume remains just as strong as the previous box sets. Included in this set is about 20 episodes including the mind-messing "In His Image", "I Dream Of Genie","Minature" (staring Robert Duvall from THE GODFATHER films), "He's Alive" with the late great Dennis Hopper and my personal favourite episode, "Valley Of The Shadow" which is just insane.

The box set also has a heap load of great extras too including commentaries, radio shows, musical scores from the show, billboards, a saturday night live clip, original promos for the next episodes a photo gallery and, best of all, the Twilight Zone comic book (on the DVD-ROM). Add to that a great picture quality and you have yourself one heck of a boxset that anyone (especially a science fiction fan) would love!

Highly highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Typical 90's Action Film With A Difference...Walken., 7 Sep 2011
This review is from: McBain [DVD] (DVD)
Christopher Walken. What a guy. There's few actors quite as instantly recongnisable as Walken with his jolted speech and often spoofed acting. The man's a living legend! He is also the reason why McBain sticks out above the slurry of action films from the early 1990s. The film itself is nothing too unique or original in the action genre - the characters and the plot are average for this genre and so's the high body count. But this is by no means a bad thing. A film typical of it's genre is just what the doctor ordered for any action fan out there. Christopher Walken is just the icing on the cake.

Overall whilst offering nothing particularly new to the action genre, it really doesn't matter. Walken is as great as ever, the film delivers on the action front with a high, brutal body count (which is to be expected from the director of the classic THE EXTERMINATOR). Add a great DVD packaging - complete with booklet about the film and reversible artwork - and this is the perfect gift for any self-confessed action-obsessed film fan.

The type of film you're liking to see in a special offer around Father's Day. Get it for The Walken!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Underated Exploitation Gem, 3 Sep 2011
This review is from: Midnight [DVD] (DVD)
HALLOWEEN, FRIDAY THE 13TH and APRIL FOOL'S DAY; three great horror films all set on some of the scariest times of the year. Well, make way for MIDNIGHT - the scariest time of the day! But does the film live up to it's spooky title? Well, that depends on what you're looking for.

Directed by the writer of the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD film, MIDNIGHT tells the story of a runaway named Nancy who ends up captured by a murderous Satanist cult, as you do. Imagine THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE with Satanists instead of cannibals and you're in the right ball park. From the start, the film's low budget is pretty obvious - and this isn't helped by the picture quality of this release - but in a way, that adds to this film's dirty, beaten charm. With gore effects from the one and only Tom Savini there's a few scenes that gore hounds may be interested in.

Overall, this exploitation film has seemed to have slipped under the radar somewhat (which is surprising considering it's involvement in the notorious video nasty controversy of the '80s and it's cast and crew - Tom Savini, John Russo and John Amplas from Romero's DAY OF THE DEAD, MARTIN and CREEPSHOW). If you fancy some good ol' low budget, backwoods horror, then this film is for you.

The DVD comes with a very informative booklet, reversible artwork and a few nice extras including commentary and interviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I'll Send You A Box Of Lollipops", 30 Aug 2011
This review is from: Pieces [DVD] (DVD)
Now we're talking!

Looking for a super gory slasher film? Looking for a film so bad its genius? Then look no further. For Pieces is just what the doc ordered! Featuring blood by the bucket loads and unintentional laughter throughout, this film would be a proud addition to any cultphile or horror fan out there. But this film is anything but your typical run-of-the-mill stalk and slash cycle. With a plot that takes the impressively vicious body count from such films as A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and FRIDAY THE 13TH mixed with a whodunit gillo-esque murder mystery, PIECES to be much much more than your cheap HALLOWEEN imitator.

The gore comes thick and fast in this crazy film, with buckets of the red stuff splashing all over the screen. From knifes to chainsaws and of course the waterbed death which has rightfully engraved its mark on the slasher genre. But that's not all, amid the gut-wrenching violence we're bombared with unbelievably ridiculous scenes that are bound to make even the most hardened of horror fans laugh out loud at how silly it all is. From a woman so stupid she has no fear whatsoever when sharing a lift with a masked man holding a roaring chainsaw (despite knowing there's a chainsaw killer on the loose) until its too late, to a tennis match thats bound to leave you in stiches and of course the incredible screaming "B*stard!" scene. This is a cult fan's dream come true!

If that's not enough, we're also treated to a great cast too. Consisting of such names as Chistopher George from zombie classic CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, Paul Smith perhaps best known for MIDNIGHT EXPRESS and Bluto in POPEYE and a whole load more.

This DVD comes compelete with some great special features too including introduction, a commentary and two featurettes/interviews. It also comes with a great and very informative booklet all about the film and reversible artwork too.

If you like your films drenched in the red stuff and packed with unintentional laughs, then this movie is perfect for you.

Highly, highly recommened.

I first heard this song whilst reading a certain ornithological piece. It was news of a certain avian variety. What do you mean you've never heard? It was my understanding that everybody had heard. A-well-a bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word..

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fulci masterpiece? You bet!, 28 Aug 2011
Without a shadow of a doubt, this 1972 Italian film is quite simply one of Fulci's all-time greatest works, alongside THE BEYOND and ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS. Whilst not quite as gory as these two, this classic giallo still remains both powerful and shocking with its theme of kiddy murders, child seduction and a truly brutal beating bound to send shivers up your spine. With a cast and crew bound to get any fan of cult cinema excited (including Florinda Bolkan from FLAVIA: THE HERETIC and LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN, Tomas Millan from DJANGO, KILL! and ALMOST HUMAN as well as a haunting score from music maestro Riz `CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST' Ortolani), this film is a must have for any cult connoisseur or fan of whodunit thrillers. Packaged in an eye catching yellow case, this film will stand out in your collection and if, like me, you're not a fan of the front artwork, the reverse cover is beautiful! This release is however let down by the lack of many extras, BUT this is made up for with a great little booklet full with interesting information.

An incredible giallo which still remains a shocking experience and that rivals the very best of Argento. Who's behind all these child murders? This film will keep you guessing right to the end! Highly recommended.
