Zulu Worker Choirs In South Africa: Isicathamiya 1982-1985

4.0 out of 5 stars A slice of cultural history, 16 April 2014

This is an album that will be of interest to a tiny number of people but I hope that by doing a review I'll alert at least one or two of them to its existence. These workers choirs are the forerunners of Ladysmith Black Mambaso and they do a mix of traditional songs and 'glee club' (American inspired) pieces. For me the handful of Zulu songs on the album are an inspiration. One is the original version of that 'Wimmawe' song from the 60's or 70's. The original is 'Imbubwe' or 'Lion' and the track sounds like a musical rendition of the warnings bouncing round a community faced with a lion on the prowl.

4.0 out of 5 stars A blast from the past, 16 April 2014

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap is one of the forgotten topline acts of the sixties that seems to have fallen from people's memories.

Great big, belting ballads. Puckett's powerful voice delivers some tremendous lyrics against a wall of sound.

I love Leo Kottke's playing and I particularly love his live performances which take the pieces you think you know off in surprising directions.

My only quibble with this album is that it's too short!

I was stunned by this album having originally come to Leo Kottke via his highly energetic early work.

This is delicate, subtle and highly nuanced. I was transfixed on first hearing it and am still.

I absolutely love this album and I'm so pleased that it's now available as a CD.

If you want to fly back to an early 20th century hop down in the swamps of Louisiana this is the soundtrack you need.
