5.0 out of 5 stars African Dystopia, 28 Aug. 2014
I've read a few Paul Theroux travel books over the years and having lived in various places in Africa while I was young, I am always fascinated by everything Paul Theroux writes about his travels there. He travels everywhere by road. Mostly alone arranging to meet or teach people along the way. His observations and comment are at times amazingly acute and reading about Angola is an education in itself. If I just say it's how you may envisage the "end of the world" could look with its images of predatory youths and endless squalor was how the capital was described by a character Paul Theroux met. Its an incredible book and I am so glad he was the man to do it because no man could take the amount of hassle, discomfort and trouble encountered in Angola. I won't be signing up on any tours I can tell you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Lehane classic, 6 Aug. 2014

This book reminded me of the film 'Once Upon A Time In America' set in the same era of speakeasys and prohibition. It tells a story of young gangsters surviving death and betrayal to make it rich in Miami and Cuba, their enemies, lovers and friends. It's a big, big masterpiece of work on a huge canvas. You won't put it it down. It's not perfect (I expected more on Emma and Joe's brother in the movies but then that could be a story on its own), but this is one hell if a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Caravan back with a Bang, 7 Jun. 2014

Caravan fans will not be disappointed with Paradise Lost. It's the first in ages and while there are no long typical 'For Richard' type tracks there is a lot here to like. The album starts off with a real rocker All this could be yours and every track has a hook and if you think they are just ok at first they all really grow. There is a Pink Floydish track called This is What we Are, which includes all the fans who paid for a share in this album to finance it. Great idea and they pull it off. Things settle on the album with a slow touching number Farewell Old Friend , although it looks like a homage to Richard Coughlan according to Pye Hastings it's also a song about the many funerals he has attended over the past few years living in Scotland. I love Trust Me I'm Doctor and I'll Be There For You which is an absolute classic. Strangely to me the title track seems a bit at odds with the rest of the album which it is because it's written by Geoffrey Richardson and JAN Schellas still a good song though but different, and of course the name of the album. Great to see the band back and in such good form -highly recommended.

A Man Without Breath: A Bernie Gunther Novel (Bernie Gunther Mystery Book 9)

Bernie Gunther, the wise cracking Berlin detective is back again investigating a series of murders on the eastern front in Russia with the backdrop of the Katyn Forrest genocide of thousands of Polish Officers and men. Bernie is sent to the area to assist in quite possibly the biggest propaganda coup for
the Germans in World War 2 on the instigation of the higher Germans command. The story includes several gruesome murders, an overheard conversation between Hitler and a German aristocrat being offered a bribe and the hunt for a serial killer. Bernie also manages to fall in love, be shot at twice and arrested and almost summarily hanged. Excellent read ****

4.0 out of 5 stars The Gentleman Spy, 22 Jan. 2014

Robert Harris has done it again. He's managed another absorbing read in an historical context. This book captures the heart and imagination of 17th Century France. It is a thriller about the beginnings of spies - spying in its infancy in a world of uniforms and gentlemen. It involves court trials, scenes of exile and despair and murder. Highly recommended it will keep you reading all night. Brilliant.

Strangely addictive, this game brings together many facets of the game including buying and selling players, changing formation and tactics, hiring and firing coaches, managers, PR people etc. You start off at the bottom of the league with a third division team and it's up to you to sort out contracts, place players on the transfer list and then choose your team for each game you play. Hopefully, you will get promotion, win a cup or too and make enough money to survive and go forward. There are 30 games a season each one is a commentary, often hilarious in the traslation lasting about 4 minutes per game and inviting you the manager to change tactics bring on subs and try and get a result. This is the bit it gets addictive and before too long you are wheeling and dealing, watching your team win or lose and firing people and two hours have gone. With a proper translation and a few other small changes it would be even more addictive. But on the whole excellent.

Fulham: a Century of Memorable Matches
Fulham: a Century of Memorable Matches
by Dennis Turner
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Gleefully Gushing at the Cottage, 17 Jan. 2012
This book is and excellent example of the proud, sincere and honest club that Fulham is. Dennis Turner includes some of the low points in the club's history as Brentford Bob gleefully gushes, but it includes so many highs -too many to go through here. This is a great book for all football fans and even Mr BB, (an attitudinizer of the first degree) ,and despite the obvious paucity, inadequacy,, and inefectualness of his own club has to admit what a wonderful, awe-inspiring and memorable book this is.
