I am a Windows PC literate silver surfer with no experience of the Android operating system. I've been thinking about getting an ereader to take on holiday and did a fair bit of research. I came close to buying a Kindle and then considered a Nexus 7 - then I came across this little gem on Amazon which is amazing value for money and does so much more than an ereader.
I purchased direct from Tabtronics, whose service has been outstanding. Free next working day delivery and a time slot of 10.33 - 11.33 advised - it was delivered at 10.33 on the dot. I contacted Tabtronics by email on a couple of occasions for technical support and received very quick responses, including a turnaround of 11 minutes on a Sunday!
The tablet looks and feels like a quality piece of kit, having a rubberised back which makes it easy to hold.
Full battery charge via AC adaptor is around 3 - 4 hours from flat. Have not been able to charge via USB, which transfers data without any problem. I have allowed battery to drain to automatic shutdown a few times and fully recharged to try to prolong life. A 2 hour streamed movie used 38% of battery life - it really does have a fully charged life of up to 5 hours.
Boots up in seconds and connects to broadband almost instantly. It picks up 8 WIFI signals at home, whereas my new SMART WIFI TV only picks up 2 and takes much longer to connect. Range is around 30 metres before signal drops out. Download speed is 3700mbs, only 500mbs less than my PC which is connected by Ethernet cable and I've had no buffering. Downloading apps takes seconds; even downloading offline Google maps is pretty quick.
I queried if the tablet will work with a 3G dongle and received the following response from Tabtronics: "Tested with a E1750 dongle and a O2 3G sim. Connected - after less than 30 seconds I had 3G - no configuration needed".
Screen clarity is brilliant and there is instant reaction to touch. The Android operating system is intuitive and so easy to use. Login via a PIN is great.
On board 8GB memory is more than enough for my needs, after downloading the apps that are most useful, 10 books and storing my music/photographs. There is always the option of an up to 32GB micro SD card if required. BBC iPlayer, Eurosport Player, Google Earth, TVCatchup (Freeview TV), use as an ereader, all work perfectly.
USB port is micro and HDMI port is mini. See following link for HDMI cable that works perfectly with an HDTV- Wired--up HDMI Mini to HDMI Male 1.8m Cable - Black
Tablet comes with USB cable for connection to PC and USB to micro USB adaptor which is just the job if connecting to a keyboard/case. See - Leather Case Cover with USB Keyboard (QWERTY) for 7 inch Tablet PCs
Negatives: Volume output and sound through on board speaker are not great but what do you expect from a tablet - See the following link for earphones that provide a quality sound and near enough double the volume output: Monoprice Enhanced Bass Hi-Fi Noise Isolating Earphones
. The sound through powered PC speakers is really good. There is no rear facing camera which is not a problem as I didn't buy this to take photographs. The User Manual is a poor translation and the font used makes it very difficult for me to read as I have poor sight. That's it!
This is a great piece of kit at a great price and the service from Tabtronics fully justify a 5* rating.
