4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 27 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent for all Cramps fans. After 30 years from their debut, they were still the same, in top form. Pity I had missed them live. Unfortunately the camera does not give enough credit to Poison Ivy who is not seen playing as much as one would wish.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant punk to listen, 13 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Shock Troops (Audio CD)
This bunch plays pleasant punk music for the ears, not to aggressive/ violent a la Four Skins/ Combat 84, more on the funny side. Yet they lack the edge of the Buzzcocks, or Pistols. I would recommend it anyway, you will feel better afterwards

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 13 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I admit I am not well acquainted with Ry Cooder, my only previous experience being "Buena vista social club". But I find this music really not appealing, it sounds "old" yet without the fascination of the true oldies. It probably has a value for those into the search of traditional songs that would be soon lost. I have tried to listen to this a few times but it has not triggered me, and probably it never will. I wonder why I bought it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Artificial, 11 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is difficult to assess a US movie from the 60's on WWII POW withheld in Germany. Here, I find a few elements as artificial. Firstly, the POWs seem to be hosted in what resembles more a Club Med than a prison. They have ample liberty of movement, not being treated as I would expect. This seems to allow them organize to the minute details their escape without much trouble - was it really like that? (Besides, all Germans here speak an impeccable US English). The isolation confinement in the "cooler" given several times to "Hilts" (S Mac Quinn) does not seem to bother him a great deal, and he comes out quite fresh every time, without displaying even the need for a shave. There is not hint of which exceptional measures were taken to prevent POWs from escaping from this prison - it all seesm quite standard to me. Then, the music is slightly unnerving, as very often a triumphant military march doe not suit the drama of the action. A good dose (perhaps overdose) of proud and glory is given to our POW bunch in the description of their "heroic" act - when in fact apparently, only with a few exceptions (3?) all of the 70 escaped are found. The heroism is then not understood, neither their achievement. Finally I found a bit obvious the stereotype of the ugly bad Germans (with hard-to-believe exception of the amiable prison director from the Luftwaffe).
But again, a US movie from the 60's - one cannot expect much of realism!

5.0 out of 5 stars a pillar of rock music, 4 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is highly recommended as the cramps, unfortunately not so well known among the larger audience, have influenced a huge number of punk, rock, gothic, metal bands. Contemporary to the NY Dolls, the Ramones and Blondie, they took their own way re-interpreting rockabilly.
I love the clean, no frills guitar playing by hot Poison Ivy. That has thought a lot to many. The mix of rock and roll, and pyscho punk is unbeatable - and is hilarious too (which is not the case of pure gothic rock/ metal). Too bad Lux Interior passed away a few years ago, which was the end of this band.

2.0 out of 5 stars hypnotizing, 4 Sep 2011
I believe people overrate this because they know a priori it comes from John Lydon. I am a HUGE fan of the Pistols (I even have been at the Filthy Lucre concert years ago) but this is completely different ... and hypnotizing. Someone may call it "experimental", I just just get tired of the same tense acute voice repeating the same sentence over and over, and the various songs all sound the same - completely different from the Pistols's songs. Besides, the raw power (forgive me, Iggy) of the Pistols is totally missing here. Mr Lydon is surely entitled to experiments, but it is thumbs down for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too long, 4 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mesrine - Parts 1 & 2 [DVD] (DVD)
I did not expect so many reviews - especially considering there is only the French version (with subtitles though) and reviewer are English-speaking. I rate this 3 starts only on purpose, even it would deserve more, and I will explain why.
It is clearly an outstanding performance not only by Vincent Cassel and the director, but also by various secondary roles (e.g. Gerard Depardieu). The whole story is intriguing and one keeps asking how comes an individual can become like this. Which in fact turns into the mean weakness of the movies: very little insight is given on the reasons that can push a sensitive and intelligent person into a vicious circle of violence and criminality. Maybe, as someone suggested, it is better this way than speculating, however the end result is a chain of back robberies, evasions, lovers
The second part starts OK, then become somewhat dull in attempting to show how Mesrine pictures himself as an anti-hero or even revolutionary. Clearly his ideas are rather fuzzy on the subject, but are sufficient to pump even more his ego and make him continue his life stile. As to his private life, one can congratulate him for the extended array of "conquetes" but - again - no hint is not given on what all these women found in him - perhaps simply the charisma and fascination of a "public enemy"?
The movie, especially the second, at several points tries to place an aura around Mesrine, I suppose in the attempt to show how he -possibly - saw himself: glorifying his acts (e.g. robbery banks would be against capitalism) - yet this attempt is weak.
The main minus of the 2movie set is that ... they could have better be condensed into one. I am not saying the 4 hrs of bank robberies an jail evasions are boring, on the contrary, but whats the point?
I am now considering, in the attempt to answer the questions above, to read the book as recommended by a reviewer (The Mesrine Conclusion).

2.0 out of 5 stars unnecessary and hardly credible, 20 Aug 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dark Blue [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
This is the usual story: a bad detective that is used by a corrupted boss, who plots a shop robbery through criminals for money. Then you add the young and good-looking partner, still believing in ethics, who will perish, and a another high-rank policeman that has the aim of cleaning up corruption in LA police. There you have it. I cannot say I have ben impressed, and I find the main character (Eldon, played by Kurt Russel) hardly believable. I really hope there are no individuals like that around LAPD.
To top it up, I watched it in two sessions because, despite the action, pace and strong language, I got bored at some point in time.

3.0 out of 5 stars slightly disappointed, 8 Aug 2011
This review is from: Zorba The Greek [DVD] [1964] (DVD)
Clearly we have here a pillar of movie history, however I was slightly disappointed. Needless to say, any parallel with Greek lifestyle and people should be made with great care, or better, not be made at all, especially some 50 years after the movie was made. This should be seen as a story, to provide some impressions. Having said this, there is not much happening to it for such a long movie, but is all right. I cannot however explain the Oscar to Lila Kedrova (Madame Hortense). I cannot really be impressed by Alan Bates (Basil) whose character unnerves me a bit for his inertia and apathy. As to Irene Papas, congratulations for the master eye movement, but she does not say many words (actually none that I can remember). What's left? Antony Quinn (co-producer) and there is not much to say besides his play Zorba majestically. The Oscar won for script and picture are well-deserved though, and the scenery is impressive. Unfortunately Crete has changed now, in that respect. Watch, enjoy and ... forget.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overrated - and very unlikely, 7 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Gone Baby Gone [DVD] (DVD)
I am surprised by the high ratings given by other reviewers to this one. The movie does keep you well awake on your chair, but that is not sufficient in my mind to get a good movie. For a start,it is much too often impossible to make out what Casey Affleck mumbles - to himself probably. Besides, his good looks and baby face really do not fit the role. His partner, Michelle Monaghan (congratulations for the soft and appealing look) is very unlikely in her role too, although she does show she can jump from a cliff in the night into a dark lake (probably her stunt anyway). She is also very convincing when feeling sorry and crying. As to the plot twists, they are also rather unlikely and really pushed a bit too far when we discover that frustrated Morgan Freeman plotted the whole thing. To top it up, the ending is not what one would expect (the good ones get happy, the bad ones are punished) in an American movie, which closes with a lonely Casey baby sitting the recovered baby. Well, if we take this is the first movie of the director, we can forgive. Perhaps 2 stars are too low, but 3 would be too many.
