5.0 out of 5 stars awesome book!, 11 Dec 2012
I love this book. It's funny, intelligent, simple, and above all else, full fo great advice and thinking. I really like the author's style and approach to life. I found myself agreeing with so much. I highly recommend it. In fact I have started giving copies of this book to others to inspire them. It's ages since I did that with a book (it used to be Paul Arden's "it's not how good you are, its how good you want to be").

4.0 out of 5 stars great insight into his earlier years, 6 Dec 2009
I particularly enjoyed the sections on Cowell's youth and early years in the business. I did not know a lot of this information, and it had been well researched and written. The story is compelling and really shows how Simon Cowell's attitude and drive saw him through some really tough moments, allowing him to achieve his dreams. It also goes into some detail on how he recognises opportunities and trends before others and manages to work them perfectly to make money. Really interesting book about a really interesting guy. Highly recommend it.

The Brick Testament: Stories from the Book of Genesis
The Brick Testament: Stories from the Book of Genesis

3.0 out of 5 stars fun, but some reservations (makes a good present), 10 July 2009
Very funny, but occasionally (probably unintentionally) takes a slightly *anti*-bible reading through its decision to picture certain scenes and characters in less than favourable ways.

Nonetheless, it is funny and obviously intended as a joke. So for LEgo lovers (like me) and those with an interest in the bible, it is a great present. A word of warning, though: it's not really a kids book for children to learn the bible. Some of the scenes of death and sex are not necessarily suitable for younger kids.

Making a Life, Making a Living: Reclaiming Your Purpose and Passion in Business and in Life

3.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring up to a point, 10 July 2009
This book is inspiring up to a point, but is a little big over the top. A coach I was working with suggested I read it, and warned me that it might seem a bit too out there, but if you approach it with that in mind, I think you will find that the real life stories and testimony from those who have made real and unusual changes in their lives, might help you if you are struggling to find meaning in your work, and are considering a new direction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but I don't go along with the thesis., 10 July 2009
This book is a fascinating study of what makes artists do what they do.

It's definitely worth reading if you are interested in this field, and is well written and referenced. But ultimately I think that it relies too much on the idea of creative people being somehow mentally unwell.

It is, nonetheless, an important work in this area.

Israeli Apartheid: A Beginner's Guide
Israeli Apartheid: A Beginner's Guide

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful, unbalanced, and ultimately unhelpful, 10 July 2009
Ben White is known to be a very biased writer. He approaches the situation in Israel from a highly prejudice point of view, and makes no effort to be balanced or even handed. So if you're an unthinking Israel hater, you might like this book, as it'll add fuel to your fire of hatred. But if you are looking for an intelligent assessment of the complex and terrible situation in the Middle East, and it's causes, look elsewhere. While White claims to be dealing with the origins of the situation, he does everything but. He prefers not to mention terrorism, and successful measures to stop it.

This author prefers everything to be black and white, good or bad, right or wrong. And for him, Israel can only do wrong. Having gone on the record as 'understanding why' people are antisemitic, one might question his reasons for this. No serious author on this topic should be this blinkered, limited, and prejudice. Such an approach is part of the problem, not the solution.

White neglects to mention vital events, such as Israel disengaging completely from Gaza in 2005. He ends many of his quotations just a bit too early, thus bending their meaning to his needs, but totally misrepresenting the original sense of the original source. And his sources all turn out to be form totally anti Israel writers. No serious author limits themselves in this way, and thus this reader can only conclude that White wasn't aiming for balance, but for dogma and and bile. On that score, he succeeds (hence the 1 star I have awarded him), but as a wannabe author and peace activist, he needs to try much harder.

A dreadful little book.

Sir Alan Sugar: The Biography
Sir Alan Sugar: The Biography

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book., 30 Mar 2009
It's certainly inspiring and interesting in these credit crunch times to read about someone who came from nowhere to be so rich and successful. This is an affectionate and uplifting read.

Sugar is an inspirational character and this book helps explain who he is, where he came from, and how he became the amazing success he is. It covers the range of different things he's done (which is fascinating), and paints a n informative and compelling portrait of the man.

Highly recommended.
