5.0 out of 5 stars Overcomes the expectations!, 17 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Lord of the Rings (Hardcover)
I own many Lord of the Rings editions, and this is definitely the most beautifully crafted. Good paper, comfortable to read, and wonderfully enriched by the images. I had previous Alan Lee versions, but the clearness of these images is astonishing! Another level of quality. Finally, the idea of putting the book in a transparent slipcase is not only elegant and original, but gives also the possibility to admire the illustrations on front and back cover without merging them with words and titles. But when you look through the transparent cover... You see a full front, with all its informations!
The only attention you must pay is on the weight of the book; somehow you've got the impression that, if handled badly, the front cover could be damaged and detached from the pages. But I don't think you'll read this edition on the beach, and when you look more carefully you see that the crafting is good, and nothing will fall out of place. So, buy it (especially at 39 pounds...) and enjoy it! My first thought when I've opened the book was: 'I wish I had read The Lord of the Rings for the first time in this edition!' Words (revised text!), images, maps, quality... Everything would have been just perfect to immerse in the story! And it still is...

5.0 out of 5 stars For students and for pleasure - but watch out, 27 Aug. 2011
The long road from the first drafts to the finished work. Philologic in Christopher Tolkien's part, literary and interesting in his father's drafts.
Just watch out: the first volume of the set is really hard to find and if you find it it's really expensive. So check for the first before buying the others, if you want the set to be complete! Otherwise... buy the 12 volumes, in paperback or also with the "print on demand" service by the editor. The inside of the three or twelve volumes editions is identical (not so in others "deluxe" Tolkien editions).
But if you really want to read the entire "History" - about 3000 pages - surely you're prepared to have some adventures to get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The final Red Book, 12 Aug. 2011
Surely the best way to experience "The Lord of the Rings" for your whole life (I can say it after trying many)! Wonderful and really pleasant to hold and to read, protected from dust and time, this volume will follow you through the whole Middle-Earth. Enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and wonderful, 12 Aug. 2011
This review is from: The Hobbit (Hardcover)
Elegant, solid, weel-printed and complete. Everything you could expect. The basic illustrations of J.R.R. Tolkien help the reader to follow artistically the story without transforming this in an illustrated edition.
Don't miss it if you like good books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for collectors only, 12 Aug. 2011
This review is from: The Silmarillion (Hardcover)
Surely the best edition of "The Silmarillion" I know. If you're not interested in illustrations but in a beautiful, durable and elegant book, easy to read and well-printed, this is the book for you. I found also amazing the letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Milton Waldman put at the beginning of the volume, really useful and enlightning to have a brief and easy-followable overview of the whole Silmarillion complex series of events. So, it's surely a collector's edition, but the content it's the more clear and easy to read I've experienced.
And, last but not least, if you're collecting the "deluxe editions" of HarperCollins, sure you can't miss this!
