5.0 out of 5 stars Celtic Woman is an Irish group which is not easy to slot into a catregory, 25 Nov. 2014

Celtic Woman is an Irish group which is not easy to slot into a catregory. Some of their songs are very 'folk', others are not. Some of the songs are old, but there's always a smattering of newer songs. But, whatever they're singing, they're always brilliant. Four women, carefully chosen for the clarity of their singing and the bell like clearness of their voices, singing, sometimes solo, sometimes as duo's or as a quartet. Brilliant!

Mairead Nesbitt is one fifth of the Irish group, Celtic Woman. She is the only non vocalist. Quite apart from being very lovely, she plays the 'fiddle' (as opposed to the music played on a violin) brilliantly and is a real toe-tapper of a musician. But she doesn't play just the fast jig and reel type pieces, she plays the instrumental ballads, too. For anyone who's unsure about this kind of music, I'd recommend checking her out on You Tube. There are a lot of short films of her, playing. I think I can guarantee, you'll be hooked!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great group. A favourite track, 21 Oct. 2014

What can be said about Little Feat that hasn't already been said or written. Perhaps never as well played by dj's over here, it's possible that they undeservedly missed out on some of the acclaim that should have been theirs. A great group. A favourite track? - Rock n' Roll Doctor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant piece of entertainment, 21 Oct. 2014

A brilliant piece of entertainment, added to by some furious fiddle playing by two very accomplished musicians, one of whom, I believe, is Mairead Nesbitt, now a member of the group, Celtic Woman. Great stuff.

If you like drums - this is definitely for you. Almost all of the greats are there. Krupa, Rich, Bellson, Cole and so on. Sadly, however, the Eric Delaney track, 'Manhatten Spiritual' is not included, though his 'Oranges and Lemons' is there. But the highlight, for me, has to be the live recording of Krupa and Rich (from 1952!) of 'Drum Battle' Two masters beating it out and the audience going crazy. Great!

Cornwells stories, about Sharpe, make great films and Sharpe is brilliantly portrayed by Sean Bean. I regret only one thing, and that is that these two stories are the last of the entire filmed series. For anyone who does not know about Sharpe (is that possible?), start with the earlier series and watch his rise through the ranks in the Napoleanic war. You'll not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Carol is not an easy story to film because we all have our own ..., 5 Sept. 2014

This review is from: Scrooge [DVD] [1951] (DVD)
A Christmas Carol is not an easy story to film because we all have our own ideas about Scrooge and how he should appear, though, generally, most settle for a skinny fellow, mean features,, boney & grasping hands and so on. His nature, of course, is well set out in the story - an irrascible and thoroughly disagreeable old man. George C. Scot and Albert Finney have both played the part, and very well, too, as has Patrick Stewart. But Alastair Sim had 'the look' as well as the acting prowess. Made in 1951, the SFX leave something to be desired but, for the period, are quite good and certainly acceptable. On the whole, a brilliant film I would recommend to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars J. J. Cale, 9 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I first heard J. J. Cale on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' singing, as far as I can recall, 'Anyway the Wind Blows'. That was all it took. I was sold on him, his music, and the style he employs. I'm unsure of the category I would put it in, but I know that it makes great listening. I'd recommend this to anyone.

I would dispute the title given to this collection. Jazz, in general, is far too big to be confined and fully represented in one small collection. But it's a good sampling and, as a compilation album, only, it does its job.

Until the advertisement for, I think, Fiat cars, I had never heard of Amy Macdonald. Sadly, I've not heard much of her since. She is clearly a very talented singer/songwriter as the other 10 tracks on this cd display very well indeed. I hope that that one track, 'This is the Life' will not prove to be her only hit. I think that she deserves better than that. Meanwhile, I look forward to new releases.
