Disappointing, 29 April 2011
OK, first the good:
*This device is good, well built, great for reading, light and definitely more convenient than a book.
*The device is cheap- great!
*The 3G and wireless is good too!
*There is a distinct lack of free content; or if there is, Amazon has worked hard to hide it.
*Content that is available for free elsewhere- most notably blogs, which are available for free on every other device I own via RSS- cost money on Kindle - even when syncing on wireless. This is surprising as the Kindle experience of blogs is substantially worse than on any other device, not supporting video, colour or images, makes me feel not so happy about paying.
*There is an extremely poor range of titles available - around half a million I believe. Many good factual books are only available in print. A quick search for a number of (popular) books I own showed the majority were not available for Kindle.
*Some titles are more expensive than their print counterparts. Usually the difference between them is marginal. Given the choice, I'd rather have the book.
*Books sold on kindle attract VAT at 20%. Print books do not.
In short, while it is clear that the Kindle is probably the future of books, this iteration isn't it. It's more suited to early adopters rather than as a book replacement. I will try it for another day or two, and likely send it back to Amazon next week.
