5.0 out of 5 stars HTPC to good old analog stereo - blissful link, 12 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After assembling a Home Theater PC with BluRay drive and the sufficently potent AMD LLano A4-3400 on an ASUS board I was stuck with the truly abominable VIA on-board sound. With purely 2-ch analog stereo equipent (a good pair of Canton speakers and a sturdy Yamaha amp) the only other option for getting sound was HDMI to the TV and the TV headphone output. That was better, but still miles from my Yamaha DVD/SACD player, which I used for comparison (also playing 320 MP3s).

This little box was my salvation. It is now being used with the RCA connectors in a stationary setup. But I've also got me a quality 5 meter headphone cable extension. To Windows 7 it presents 44.1/24, 48/24 and 96/24 sound capabilities. Setting WinAmp to 24 bit support and both WinAmp and Windows 7 volume controls at 100% with all software DSP options disabled and the choice of sampling rate in line with the source files (almost 100% 44.1 kHz for me), I'm getting killer results now that surpass the SACD player. Setting 96/24, which leaves Windows 7 DirectSound to do the upsampling, is not quite as crisp.

I've tried my luck with the elusive WASAPI exclusive mode with the Maiko plugin for WinAmp. That thing doesn't seem to be stable yet and I saw WinAmp crashing repeatedly when jumping to another track from the media library. I looked at Foobar2000 but decided that I'd be missing too many WinAmp features that I've become accustomed to. So I'll stick with shared mode and the standard Direct Sound output plug-in. With HDMI set as the default sound device, WinAmp is the only application streaming to the rPAC during music playback.

When watching BluRays with PowerDVD I'll turn the sampling rate to 96/24 and revert to 44.1/24 afterwards. Once exclusive mode support becomes stable I could leave the 96/24 sampling for shared mode and WinAmp would switch to 44.1/24 while the Maiko plugin takes control. Other than this convenience I didn't find any difference in sound between shared (but single application) and exclusive mode.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kathy's album peak, could fill the sampler with this alone, 29 Aug. 2011

OK, just a single review so far? Good old Pete the Music Fan lauding one of his many country ladies. Need a second opinion? Well not from me. I could't agree more. This deserves every single one of its five stars. Ever heard Kathy's voice? This magic combination of clarity and warmth. Handing over the production controls to Brent Maher (who led the Judds to fame) was also a winning decision. It is swinging, it is traditional, but with a clear sparkling sound. Don't settle for any sampler, get this brilliant individual album of one of my favourite singers.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a voice, what value for money, 29 Aug. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This fellow can/could sing. What a powerful vocal performance. Back then this was as hard-rocking as country rock probably got. To todays ears the slide guitar and occasional fiddle might sound like mainstream Nashville. But don't be fooled. Steve Young's got the blues, does powerful ballads, as well as honky-tonk and outlaw country. Add into the equation that late 70s engineers knew how to get the sound right and preserve it for latter days and that we've got two stellar albums united here, each on their own disk, this is a fantastic package. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars All it is cracked up to be. Have a redneck party!, 29 Aug. 2011

This is just excellent from beginning to finish. I don't know if Ms Wilson is just occupying such a well-defined niche or this is really a concept album from some Nashville masterminds. It all comes together. As with all country music the vocals got to be great to lift it from mediocrity. And does she lift herself above the masses. Power like the Dixie Chicks singer, but even more real, more natural. The band and the production don't get in the way too much, really letting it rock at times. Best of breed for car driving or party music. Not just for rednecks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Based on substance: Best Jayhawks album, 14 Nov. 2010
This review is from: Sound of Lies (Audio CD)
This needs a few more spins in the player than the two classics with Mark Olson that preceded it. But Gary Louris has done an admirable job with this album and is a very good vocalist in his own right. The band could have used a better guitar player (like Nels Cline for Wilco), but this doesn't taint the overwhelmingly good material recorded here. This is now my most played Jayhawks album. I especially like the quality lyrics and the variety here. Masterful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Guy Clark Classic, 14 Nov. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Workbench Songs (Audio CD)
Back in the studio with his long time collaborators Guy Clark has come out with one of the strongest albums in his career. A bit more cheerful and varied than The Dark this rises to the same quality level as Dublin Blues. The production of this mostly acustic, guitar based sound - light years away from Nashville - and Guy's vocal form are stellar. And the lyrics are ample proof again, why Guy is held in such high regard as a songwriter and poet.

5.0 out of 5 stars The queen of female country songwriters, 1 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am just blown away by the timeless quality of Loretta Lynns output after listening to this bargain sampler. She's so real. Her background as the coal miners daughter and and teenage mother is so credibly reflected in her songs. And it is good time music, uplifting and positive. No country music collection would be complete without her work represented. Certainly paved the way for Dolly Parton.

5.0 out of 5 stars Older, wiser and still brilliant, 1 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dublin Blues (Audio CD)
This came out about 20 years after his debut with Old No. 1. Guy Clark never had the sales figures that would match the quality of his music and not much of his output over the years is easily available. This is available for good reason: It is a stellar album. If you have any other stuff from him already, then get this without much further consideration. Fantastic songwriting and excellent production. And I love him for his singing voice as much as for his lyrical skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes me smile and sit in awe at the same time, 6 Dec. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Isn't it great that just taking a chance in the bargain bin can open up a whole new musical experience. These old 78rpm recordings from the 20's and 30's probably sound as fresh as they can. They certainly still bring Django, Stephane, and their collaborators to life for todays listeners. Their European take on jazz is so groundbreaking, so innovative, so fresh, so artful and yet so wildly entertaining. So when picking a few CDs of your long time favourite artists and styles, just throw this into the shopping basket with them for a change. You won't regret it!

I had this on my wish list for a while and grabbed the oppportunity as soon as this appeared from one of the used sellers at an acceptable price. What a treasure! This sounds like Shelby Lynne and producer Brent Maher clearly had a precise vision of what they wanted to turn out and went for it with all their guts. This is swinging, bluesy country music of timeless quality featuring Shelby's marvelous voice (at only age 24). I thought they had picked mostly classic songs and was the more surprised to see how many tracks are original Maher compositions with Shelby contributing. Shelby recently stated in an interview that she has closed the chapter before 'I'm Shelby Lynne' and won't be playing these songs live anymore. I think she can still be mighty proud looking back on this achievement.
