5.0 out of 5 stars a great little book to carry with you, 1 Mar 2012

This little book of pen sketches of the Cotswolds villages was an ideal carrying companion for our walks around them all - the selected views and the quality of the artwork are great, and you can gain much amusement by detecting the small alterations that the artist has made on several pages either to show something that can't be seen or even to telescope the view to include a building that would otherwise be off the page. You can even spot a stream that's been moved to the other side of the road! Although drawn many years ago it is wonderful to see how very little things have changed.

I bought this guide for it's content having been a visitor to Swanage several times, and much of it was just right, however some entries are more for the specialist, for example the train section - nevertheless, a good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars a concise and informative book of biographies, 3 Dec 2011
This excellent book of concise biographies of the saints is a perfect way to become familiar with their lives - each of these 71 saints is given one page of biography opposite an illustration. The biographies are full of factual information and the splendid illustrations, by two artists, show how they may have looked or did in fact look where this is known. They range from the New Testament saints, such as Peter, Andrew and Mary Magdalene to modern ones such as Maria Goretti and
Maximilian Kolbe. In a short time one gathers a real introduction to these celebrated lives. Highly recommended, and not just for children - I am way past being young!

5.0 out of 5 stars efficient, handy and inexpensive, 11 Jun 2011

This outdoor/indoor temperature monitor was just right for a present for my sister-in-law. It is small, handy, easy to post, works perfectly well and is inexpensive. And, unlike some monitors, it does not need an outside sensor as there is a wire connected to the monitor which is fed through a tiny hole to the outside world, and this provides the sensor - a very good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jagger the Outlaw, 19 May 2011

This review is from: Ned Kelly [DVD] (DVD)
This is the original Ned Kelly film from way back with a young Mick Jagger as the 'hero'. Jagger does a sterling job in portraying the Australian Outlaw, including lines like "Kissing a man without a beard is like eating porridge without salt." The songs throughout fit the film perfectly - "Blame it on the Kellys" - and we all wondered if the Clarke whistle which we all bought in the sixties was around at that time (see "The Wild Colonial Boy").

5.0 out of 5 stars modern girl becomes auschwitz inmate, 19 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This film of Jane Yolen's book fills the gap which is often present in modern youth - what would it have been like if it was me in a nazi camp? Present day life is so far removed from this historic period that it's hard to imagine what it would have been like - and this surfaces in many (very funny) conversations between the girls from the past and the modern girl transported by some magic to the auschwitz death camp. In the camp the harsh reality of racial intolerance is dramatically experienced and ends with ... well, best not to spoil it! After seeing the film I'd recommend reading the book which has several aspects not in the film and is, in my opinion, even better.

This review is from: The Devil's Arithmetic (Paperback)
I read this book after seeing the film (which was great), and found the book to be even better! The prominence of the young inmate who lets the newcomers know how to survive, the midden where the underage inmates hide - all here in the book and missing from the film - all in all a most worthwhile read.
