3.0 out of 5 stars An Easy Read that has some tangents, 14 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Dug Down Deep (Paperback)
Joshua Harris is the senior pastor at Covenant Life Fellowship in Gaithersburg, Maryland, U.S.A. In this book the author covers and overview of reformation theology and pneumatology in conversational style format. With the large fonts and his writing style the book is very easy to read and would be appropriate for young teens and up. Too me it seems that the author is sincere in his writing and wanted to introduce people too the Holy Spirit and aid in their spiritual growth. Harris has decided to introduce the reader to the basics of reformation Christianity that is Charismatic in nature. He writes about many of the basic tenants of Christianity and includes personal stories of his family and friends too show how one may be in error, find faith and then continue down the narrow path of a growing faith that leads to Jesus Christ.

The authors honesty about himself and his father is refreshing and will aid the reader to see how one may come to be on the path to learn about true faith after living a life of a superficial christian; or being a christian in name only. Harris learned as he went through life that he needed to know God personally and he shares his stories with us of his journey toward that end. This book seems to be targeted for the christian that has yet too truly accept the gift that God has given each of us.

Harris explains that theology is the study of the nature of God and on some level everyone has studied theology even if on a superficial level. For as he and many have pointed out one cannot profess that God does not exist and not call this the study of theology. The author gives us his interpretation of the basis of theology and why it is important to study. He then starts to introduce reformation Christian doctrine of the charismatic church and pneumatology. We also read that since the Reformation, protestant Christians have agreed that a church must have "the right preaching of God's Word and the right practice of baptism and communion."

I do agree that a church is built on a specific message and not just a random idea. And that message is was delivered to us in the Holy Bible. Baptism and communion are required to be part of the church. As the author points out baptism is performed once and communion many times throughout a Christians life. The New Testament spells out what is required of a local church where Christians are to join as a congregation for their own spiritual health, that of their brethren and of the world around them so that they may be introduced too Jesus Christ, the Word of God.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Overview of the Armed Struggle in Colombia, 10 Jun. 2011
Gary Leech uses original sources and key interviews in writing this book on the history and evolution of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the FARC, from its inception to where the organization stands today. The FARC is Latin America's oldest and largest insurgency organization and has existed for almost five decades and will probably continue too operate for at least another two if true social and economic reforms do not happen in Colombia. We read of the origins of this insurgency and its adaptability over time too the forces it opposes in Colombia.

What started out as a grass roots supported guerrilla movement who had the interest of the repressed rural population has involved into a strong self-sufficient army and over the decades seems too have disconnected some what from the people. But with the economic and military aid being brought too bare on the FARC over the last decade by the United States it seems to be heading back toward its original ideological basis. Though not involved in the actual international drug trade they do derive a substantial income from taxing the drug trade. This has caused the media and western government to classify the FARC as narco-terroist.

But as the facts as presented in this book show it would be wrong too use this category for the FARC. This rebel group has been responsible for many human rights violations which have diminished dramatically since most of the infractions that from the FARC are the kidnapping; this is not too intimate that they have not committed atrocities. And seventy-six percent of all the real human rights violations were carried out by government supported paramilitary organizations and now the military and police force of Colombia. It is with government approval or knowledge that there will be no reprisal when entire villages are rounded up by the government.

The author shows us that the non-profit organizations that kept actually records on the incidents use too report the actual numbers and the FARC was a small percentage of the violations. But we do see how the government of Colombia and the Media in general distorts most of the human rights violations and label them wrongly as the work of the FARC. There is no question that the Colombian authorities, the paramilitaries and the FARC have all committed human rights violation and perpetuate this violence. But the true numbers and who is responsible should be reported. The government of Colombia have displaced almost five million people and this is not headline news.

According too the author the FARC was willing to negotiate a true peace accord with the government, yet the government refuses to include any real reform in there discussions and limit it too disarming the FARC and the FARC would not agree too a country wide cease fire because of the paramilitary groups. From Leech's account we also see that the FARC has tried too do more good for the majority of the people of Colombia with infrastructure projects and the like than the government ever has. Though not reported the government does work on infrastructure or the cities would not be sustainable. It is ironic that the FARC build a bridge and convince farmer too stop growing coca for cocaine production and to grow the less profitable food produce. And then the government bombs the bridge making it impossible for those same farmers to get their product to market.

This book, though short, will give you a strong foundation with which to begin too study the FARC and government of Colombia. Now that the United States see's Colombia as a major area of its geopolitical position it is hard too see how the true social and economic reforms will be brought about that will unite the country and stop the violence. Even if the Colombian military with the funding and help of the United States were too succeed in destroying the FARC the violence would continue as violent criminal enterprises formed all over those regions from the unemployed and displaced; as have happened in other countries.n All sides have to take responsibility for the violence and atrocities they have committed.

What is the reality in Colombia? I think one would need too gather more information from other sources. But the above review, as expected, is based on this book and not other sources. Yet it seems like a good overview and worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Suspenseful Film, 7 Jun. 2011
This movie was made as an ABC "movie of the week" and was movie directorial debut of Steven Spielberg. He had just finished the first Colombo episode and this was his chance to direct a movie. He had ten days, yet it took thirteen, too film this movie and did it all on location. This movie will have you on the edge of your seat yet keep you entertained. Dennis Weaver stars as a man who ends up being harassed and placed in dangerous situations by a truck driver. The co-star of this movie is the old Peterbilt truck that is the antagonist. This is an excellent movie of suspense reminiscent of a Hitchcock film. A fantastic first movie and another great acting job by Mr. Weaver.

The Special features of this collector's edition include the making of the movie with Steven Spielberg, the author speaking about the writing of the short story and script and Spielberg's other work on television. Plus the standard trailer, gallery, production notes and biographies of cast and of the filmmakers.

Staying True
Staying True
by Jenny Sanford
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £6.25

2.0 out of 5 stars Was there ever a relationship?, 7 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Staying True (Hardcover)
This is a memoir of Jenny Sanford, the first lady of South Carolina, whose husband Mark publicly confessed his affair with an Argentinean woman in June 2009. Jenny Sanford discusses her family, her past support of her husband's political career, and the faith in God that helped her through his infidelity. But when you read this book one would wonder why she ever consented to marry anyone who according too the narrative appeared too never be in love with her, was not looking for a true relationship just someone to bare his children, boys only according too his contract, and was in her words frugal. And saying frugal is being generous. This book paints a picture of a very selfish man and weak willed woman who let him do what he wanted. She was a free campaign manager and the mother of his children and it appears nothing else in his mind. From the start it is obvious that this was not and never would be a healthy relationship.

Cobb's Legion Cavalry: A History and Roster of the Ninth Georgia Volunteers in the Civil War
Cobb's Legion Cavalry: A History and Roster of the Ninth Georgia Volunteers in the Civil War
by Harriet Bey Mesic
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A Well Written and Researched History Book, 4 Jun. 2011
I felt like I was reading a real history book. I found that the format and thorough research in this book to be excellent and the narrative easy to read. Focusing on just the cavalry of Cobb's Legion we get detail accounts of small skirmishes and picket line duties that most general history of the Civil War would gloss over or completely ignore. Using official records, diaries and soldiers correspondence Harriet Bey Mesic lets us into the world of what it was like for those who served in the Ninth Georgia Volunteers Cavalry Unit, "Cobb's Legion Cavalry," during the Civil War.

The necessity of the cavalry always being in harms way either from being on picket duty, too probing and exploiting weak points in the enemies lines, protecting flanks or outflanking the enemy. They seem to always be on the move, under nourished, without rest, and with poor equipment. Yet they often faced overwhelming odds but did their duty. The men of this unit were fearless, aggressive and successful while following the civilized rules of war that Shermans' army ignored. The constant activity of the unit is detailed but there is no question that the honor of the unit and those they opposed where always recorded as well. It was this very honor and reputation that was used to force this unit too accept the terms of a peace agreement.

As in any war you see the hardships involved, horrendous cost of battle on human life and the collateral damage it causes. The history of the units battles covers half the book and spans the entire war. Ms. Mesic has drawn some maps too help the reader visualize better the situation of the clashing forces. The last half of the book has appendices that includes a rooster of 1457 men of the legion in addition too that of their officers. This rooster includes short biographies were possible of each man from his birth date until his death. It is interesting after reading what these men did during the war too see how their life turned out after it had ended. "Cobb's Legion Cavalry" is a book that I highly recommend and I hope to read more books like this in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use and Setup, 25 May 2011
I have never used a computer camera before so the camera and what it came with was all I know. Now for what I do know is when I open the box this camera has a base that can be formed to be position where you like; including on top of a desktop's monitor. The computer is connected to your computer by a USB connection and the software is plug and play. Never having used a Web Cam before this was up and running in no time.

As too quality I have nothing to compare it with but those I spoke with said they could hear me fine, I looked naturally lit and they liked the fact they could see my surroundings or when someone was beside me. Also note I did not make any recordings with it so cannot comment on that portion and this rating is for this product as a video communication device. So for a novice and first time user I can highly recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless Aphorisms, 25 May 2011
The Jesuit scholar Balrasar Gracian wrote these aphorisms over three centuries ago. His position allowed him to be a keen observer of many in positions of power. And his writing can be used today as it was in his time in business, politics, and life in general. The author shares his wisdom on how to live a life with others. His writings advise the reader on many of life's situations and on personal interactions. Whether considered a work on philosophy or behavioral science this book is one which the reader will refer too often. There is no need to read the book straight through from cover to cover but once. For in the back of this volume you will find a list of the aphorisms where you can go to the one that you feel would be appropriate to your situation and help with some valuable insight.

5.0 out of 5 stars A safe way too buy Game Time, 18 May 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This card is worth while mainly if you do not wish to use your credit card on the NET and have one less location storing your financial information. And of course when on sale. I just missed a sale on this card at Amazon USA when it was listed for a price which matched the "Founders plan".

This prepaid card at the current price allows you to play the game as if you pay month-to-month using a credit card with Trion Worlds. For me the added security of not having to give your credit card info for your subscription is a great bonus and this is perfect for anyone who wants to purchase a gift of playing time for anyone they know that plays the game. I will just watch for when Amazon discounts it.

Brothers in Arms: Al Qai'ida and the Arab Jihadists
Brothers in Arms: Al Qai'ida and the Arab Jihadists
by Camille Tawil
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.80

4.0 out of 5 stars Arab Jihadist and what relationships existed with al-Qa'ida, 5 May 2011
Camillie Tawil is an investigative reporter for Arabic language agencies. His interactions and the trust the Jihadists seem to have in him have given the author a unique opportunity to interview key personnel in a variety of movements. As we read in the early decades before our current millennium most groups focus regardless of bases for training were within the borders of their own country. And groups with differing views would become at odds with themselves. The evolution of some of the main groups discusses from Algeria, Egypt and Libya for example are quite interesting. And almost all existed before Al-Qa'ida was invented as an administrative and training organization in Afghanistan. Al-Qa'ida's attack on U.S.A. soil brought so much pressure to bare on all Jihadist organizations with even cursory ties with Al-Qa'ida it all but caused its practical demise.

The author, as western intelligent agency have ascertained, admits that Al-Qa'ida is now a group of separate autonomous groups that had taken on their name to lend legitimacy to their cause in the eye of Jihadist after the invasion of Iraq. Osama bin Laden was never able too unit the various Jihadist groups, but after the fateful attack in America in 2001, the Jihadist had no choice but to at least attempt to work together for their own survival as small independent groups using the Al-Qa'ida name as a franchise would. The author surmises that we will see if the new moderate ideas will overcome the radical and violent methods of those using the the name Al-Qa'ida for their own causes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Antibiotic Use: Cause and Effect, 5 May 2011
The authors outline and explain a problem that is not new but is starting to be brought into the public light. This book is written for people who use antibiotics and is written at an introductory yet clear level. Paramedics, farmers, hospital administrators and especially the public at large should read this book. If you do not have a background in basic biology the authors have included two appendix that give the basic background required to understand the rest of the text and I would recommend starting there.

The book is well presented on how the medical and agricultural use of antibiotics and their misuse has lead to pathogens mutating and becoming antibiotic resistance. And at present dosage and actually overuse of antibiotics will lead to a pathogen that will cause a pandemic. When is not discussed but when you read that rate at which the resistance strain mutate and spread it seems that this should be a subject of high priority. Yet pharmaceutical companies have been shutting down their antibiotic research division for it is not cost effective for them to continue.

The book is informative and not an alarmist manifesto. It covers the facts of use and history of antibiotics and present day measures. And proposes how we may be able to stop this path to a super resistant pathogen; a term not used by the authors. Most people know that the effectiveness of any type of drug diminishes with use and in low dosage the pathogens themselves become resistant. In order to rectify this situation will take a change of culture for all involved; farmers, medical professionals and moist important the general public. At present the authors show that all we are doing at present to slow down the spread and creation of antibiotic resistant pathogens is to increase dosage levels. These increased dosages may have more side effects but avoid the spread of the resistant pathogens.

I highly recommend that this book be read by medical practitioner, farmers and anyone who uses antibiotics. This is a very easy and interesting read.
