This review is from: Rameau: ZaÔs (Audio CD)
An outstanding piece of work. Some of Rameau's finest music. A wonderful Chaconne extending over instrumental and choral music, as in La Princesse de Navarre. An extended recitative in Act V may be less appreciated but is crucial to the drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Enchanting Tale, 23 Oct. 2014
This review is from: The valley of song (Hardcover)
I first read this in French as a child and loved it.
This was my first introduction to Elisabeth Goudge and I read many of her titles both in French and in English later.
I bought it in English when I became able to do so. I was actually shocked to noticed that it had never been reprinted and had to search for it.
I think it is one the finest stories of children fantasy I have ever read. I personally rate it higher than C.S. Lewis' Narnia books. Although it is, like them, a Christian fantasy, I find it much less preachy. Whereas I can't read the Narnia books without cringing, my enjoyment of The Valley of Song is undiminished and renewed at every reading.
I really liked the way she presented a universe Before this world, where greek mythology and astrological signs where blended to make it a unique tale.
I found particularly poignant the incidents where the adults that the heroin Tabitha tried to bring with her have difficulty in going into the Valley of Song because they are unable to connect with their own inner child.
I recommend you connect with your own inner child before you start reading The Valley of Song. You should have no problem getting into it this way.

The Day the World Took Off - the Roots of the Industrial Revolution
The Day the World Took Off - the Roots of the Industrial Revolution
by Sally Dugan
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars I recommend The Prehistory of the Mind, 3 Sept. 2014
This is an extraordinary book, based on the extraordinary television series of the same title, which should be made available in DVD but isn't :-(
The book explores what led to the Industrial Revolution happening where and when it did, in the UK at the end of the 18th century, and step by step, takes us increasingly further back in time to find what led to that, and what was behind that, to finish about 10,000 before, at the start of the Agrairian Revolution.
The structure, searching for the cause of the cause of the cause, builds up a compelling argument and persuasively identifies the accumulation of contributory factors which led to this.
For those wanting to go even further back in time, I recommend The Prehistory of the Mind, The Singing Neanderthals and After the Ice by Steven Mithen.

1.0 out of 5 stars An earlier version of the first chapters of his new book, 19 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was disappointed that this e-book was in fact made of an earlier version of his new book The Dark Between the Stars and now a prequel, as I was led to understand.
Expensive for what it was.
