3.0 out of 5 stars Reebus is getting old, 3 Dec 2013

Ian Rankin is a master storyteller as ever. I just got the feeling this was a little laboured as if Rankin was feeling his age as much as Johyn REbus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the paper version, but much less bulky, 3 Nov 2013

This review is from: The Telegraph (Kindle Edition)
For many years I have taken the Weekly Telegraph. The electronic version is nothing like as satisfying but fills the gap

3.0 out of 5 stars The blue eyed boy, 21 Sep 2013

I bought this to read a balanced account of this much maligned King.. Markham is a serious scholar. The text is littered with references and quotations. I'm flattered that he thinks his readers able to read the Latin and French quotations and that there is no need for translations.

It is very readable but so biased. No mediaeval king can have been such a paragon of virtue

The Business Of Dying: (Dennis Milne 1)

4.0 out of 5 stars Bad good guy, or vice versa?, 4 Sep 2013

Simon Kernick is a great story teller, who keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Denis Milne is wholly believable and indeed likable, despite the things he does. A cracking good read.

The Autobiography of Sergeant William Lawrence A Hero of the Peninsular and Waterloo Campaigns
The Autobiography of Sergeant William Lawrence A Hero of the Peninsular and Waterloo Campaigns
Price: £0.00

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best first hand accounts of the Peninsular War, 11 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Since Sgt Lawrence is quoted so often by all the leading historians, you can be sure that he tells it like it really was. without bravado or relying on Napier's History. It should be on every Peninsular War buff's bookeshelf, or on his/her Kindle

4.0 out of 5 stars Rankin at his best, 5 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Tooth And Nail (Kindle Edition)
It is small wonder that Ian Rankin is one of the best selling thriller writers of today. He is a great story teller, characterisation is superb and the reader is left in doubt to the very end about the killer's identity. One assumes that the detail of police procedure and relationships within the service are genuine, they certainly feel that way.

I definitely plan to work my way through all the Rebus books

4.0 out of 5 stars Typical le Carre, 27 April 2013

le Carre is a brilliant writer and the story rattles along well, but I thought the ending weak and unsatisfactory

Fighting With Popski's Private Army
Fighting With Popski's Private Army
Price: £6.23

5.0 out of 5 stars A really well written tale of Special Forces Operations, 12 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I read this immediately after reading Popski's own account and I would strongly recommend this to anyone, as the two books compliment each other.

Yunnie was a man ideally suited to this type of warfare, which he clearly enjoyed. His descriptions of the countryside, the weather and the actions are superb and bring the events to life. He was clearly an exceptional leader and forged an outstanding team.

Like, I fear many others, he had difficulty in settling into a peacetime world and it was probably fitting that he should meet his end as a mercenary in the Congo

Portuguese To English Dictionary (Portuguese Edition)
Portuguese To English Dictionary (Portuguese Edition)
Price: £2.01

1.0 out of 5 stars A very limited dictionary, 15 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is possible that this might come into its own as the 'default' dictionary, if you are reading a Portuguese language book on Kindle, but as a dictionary to look up words found in a non-electronic book, it is virtually worthless. Having typed in the word to be translated. That word and only that word is shown and only one word given as the translation.

The Services of General Sir George Madden 1789-1814
The Services of General Sir George Madden 1789-1814
Price: £1.99

4.0 out of 5 stars The Journal of a Cavalry Officer, 28 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Madden was told he complained too much, but he had much to complain about. It is fascinating as it fleshes out the accounts of the great historians, describing what it was really like at the sharp end. Mark Thompson's notes are valuable, correcting some points and dates and giving greater explanations of others.

I found it particularly interesting as I was reading 'Elvas y Badajoz' - cronicas de guerra at the same time. This is a compilation of 60 letters written by a Portuguese lawyer living in Elvas, to a correspondent in Lisbon and cover the turbulent first six months of 1811
