A good edition of this profound Sufi poem. Many fine illustrations. The translation, though dated, remains superbly readable. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pure Land Goldmine, 5 Jun. 2016

I am not really in a position to judge the full worth of D T Suzuki's virtual equation of the Christian mystic Meister Eckharts thoughts with the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism. Just a bit above my head. But this little inexpensive book ends with a treasure trove of quotations from the Journals of the Pure Land myokonin ( "saint" ) Saichi. As such it is a goldmine. The extracts from the Journals are very extensive and for the Pure Land devotee beyond price. Thank you.

Unfortunately at Location 663 there is some sort of download problem - part of what is obviously another book entirely intrudes upon the T'ang Poetry.

Hopefully this can be sorted out. I was enjoying the book.

Returned for refund.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for "traditional" Pure Landers, 9 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the Buddhist path. In clear language it sets out fundamental principles of practice set in a broad open hearted grasp of many of the expressions of both Theravada and Mahayana. Very modern.

Yet as a Pure Lander open to all aspects of what could be called the "modern world" I would need to class its message as primarily one of "self power" and further, sees human beings as each finding a place within a hierarchical structure.

The heart of Pure Land Buddhism is "Other Power". Though the nature of our own "effort" must needs be addressed in my opinion this book misses the mark. The myokonin Saichi addresses such in his own way....

O Saichi! Will you tell us of Other Power?
Yes, but there is neither self power nor Other Power.
What is, is the graceful acceptance only.

Again, the fundamental egalitarian nature of the Pure Land seems lost ( this notwithstanding the need for reverence towards certain others which I would happily acknowledge)

A really beautiful collection of Japanese Woodblock Prints. Such great value - the good HD quality prints seem unending. Cherry blossoms, moonlit scenes, Mount Fuji, boats on the river - the list goes on and on. Wonderful for browsing at odd times of the day. Superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needed no convincing, 6 May 2016

Having read several authoritative histories of the Holocaust I needed no convincing that it is in fact one of the most well documented and corroborated event of the 20th century.

In all probability those who seek to deny it ever took place as stated will never read such a book as this. Their agenda would never allow simple facts to deter them from their aims.

Maybe this book will contribute to reaching those with no such explicit agenda, who question the events reality out of ignorance and random opinions expressed within their cultural homelands. One can only hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent selection, 4 May 2016

I once had a hard copy of this and read it end to end so was familiar with the various essays when delving into the Kindle version. I would say they are more for the already committed Pure Lander rather than those who seek an introduction to this expression of the Buddhist faith. As such the selection of essays is excellent and covers a wide range. Personal testimonies, historical expressions, modern, interfaith (Christianity and Buddhism) Essays by D T Suzuki, Unno, Bloom. They are all here for contemplation and for gaining greater insight and knowledge of this enlightening form of Mahayana Buddhism. Very good. Thank you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reference the Kindle edition, 1 May 2016

Sadly I am unable to make sense of the cross referencing. Lines of the poems are indexed in blue, when touched you are taken to the notes, but then another touch seems to take you back somewhere else. In the end you lose where you are and need to go back to the list of poems at the front to regain your place. It may just be me, but I really think you would need the hard copy of this book to glean its obvious riches. Returned for refund.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy exploration, 29 April 2016

Although the books title would seem to suggest just a trace of nihilism this would be a mistake. The whole theme of the book is more along the lines of "Life after God". Maybe, as has been said, if we do not believe in God we will believe in anything, yet this implied suggestion of superficiality in such 'non believers" is swept away by Peter Watson's fine guidance. What many have found instead of "God" is a life of genuine affirmation. Throughout I felt intimations of certain "eastern" thought-forms that further illuminated the entire text and would have supported and amplified much found there. "Chop wood, carry water" etc etc ! Irrespective of this, this is a fine book. And for Christians, yes indeed, as Meister Eckhart has said, pray God to free me from God. He shall die that we might live.

A very positive book and well worth reading slowly. And rereading.

A wonderful selection of paintings. Each is able to be enlarged without fuzziness - in fact by zooming in on the Kindle most reveal Seurat's artistry to great effect with the vibrant colours leaping out. I was unfamiliar with all but the most well known. Beautiful and nice to have for browsing and inspiration. Thank you.
