Papermate InkJoy 550 RT 1.0 mm Medium Tip Retractable Ball Pen - Black

4.0 out of 5 stars Still a biro but more fun, 24 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Nice thick 1mm nib which distinguishes it from cheap biros and noticeably fast with even ink coverage for writing as fast as you want to think in exams! Thicker base makes it easier to hold too. For those that like the expensive sounding click when you take your pen out of an imaginary breast pocket - this does this too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative but a bit one-sided, 22 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is the second edition of a book by a rather earnest Canadian academic. At times it reads like a diatribe about how the international food industry is bad and it's all a conspiracy of international financiers and Trans National Corporations.

I am quite open to such ideas - particularly to the view that developing country producers often get a very small share of the price for the food they grow - hence movements like free trade and attempts to raise consumer awareness; and that there needs to be investment in more sustainable and less environmentally damaging food production. This book contains lots of interesting facts - for instance about the oligopoly power of trading companies - 50-60% of the world's cocoa trade is controlled by just three firms; 85% of the world's tea trade is controlled by seven firms; and 75% of the world's banana trade is controlled by just five firms. I can imagine that power looks even more concentrated if you are on an island and can only sell your bananas to one bid trader.

However, I got a bit bogged down in an extensive discussion of investments in food futures - derivative instruments that are about betting on the price of a food commodity in the future but which do not need to be linked or hedged at all against real world future contracts to buy actual quantities of wheat. The author is of the view that this must by association have contributed to food price volatility at the same time as investment in these derivatives was growing - but even she has to admit that it is difficult to prove the link. It is a bit like trying to argue that by betting on a horse, you increase its chances of winning.

4.0 out of 5 stars More subtle than some lipsticks, 22 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Quite pinky purply but a little goes a long way so the overall effect is quite subtle rather than a full on lipstick application. Dabbed an infinitesimal surplus amount onto my cheeks! Nicely moisturising.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will the Post-it note survive the hot desk?, 20 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I love Post-it notes deeply. A long time ago in my career, I ran my entire working life on a movable set of visible reminders on my desk.

Now, I just put up a Post-it note to say that someone can use my desk while I am away. Post-it notes have been brought into new use - a means of consultation. All thoughts and opinions have to be fitted on to Post-it notes at the team awayday - a few words - and stuck to the consultation board, and arranged in discussion and priority order - and then photographed. It seems a curious way of listening to each other, and the words are often banal - but makers of Post-it notes must be relieved!

4.0 out of 5 stars For fogeys and over forties, 17 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This metallic orange is almost deliberate retro assertion - others may be using the latest pen technology, you are going for the classic click - and the metallic orange casing is like something from a bygone age. There may be a secret code in operation here - one stationery fetishist with £14 to spare on a biro can speak to another across the table.....

Personally I'd always go for black ink, but maybe the blue is retro too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the more active, 15 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The pad is an integral part of these knickers, so you can pull them up and down again without having to worry about the pad becoming dislodged.

They are a peachy pink colour, and feel like they are made of a mix of paper and lycra, so not quite like real knickers but passably close. They might actually be very useful if you are physically active - even a runner - and have accidents, as they sit very firmly on the waist, the pad is not too thick and there is no danger of it becoming dislodged.

There is an absorbency rating up beyond this, if you are seriously doubly incontinent. I would however have thought separate knickers and pads would be better for serious problems - as you can then replace the pad without having to entirely undress.

Note on sizing - I had difficulty stretching these 'large' size knickers beyond forty inches round the waist - so not really sure that they would, as claimed, fit someone much bigger without being seriously uncomfortable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not really for anyone under forty, 14 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I'm afraid I find this quaint in a disposable age. It reminds me of my aunt's house in the 1970s where such pens used to lie abandoned on bookcases, and when they ran out you had to make a special visit to the stationer's for refills.

In an age where smart phone cameras can be set to make an authentic sounding loud click when you take a photo, this pen achieves it manually. Draw it out from your smart jacket pocket in meetings, and you may mark yourself out as a fogey or stationery obsessive.

It may go the same way as the wrist watch - an anachronism largely abandoned by anyone under forty.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite yummy but not for all recipes, 7 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is quite a rich flour compared to grain based flours - it is naturally 9% fat. It also absorbs a lot of water when stirred. I tried making a simple pancake with it - and found the high water content meant it spat and went soggy. But it's tasty and healthy - the right kind of fats and 18% protein unlike some other alternatives.

The high moisture should mean it will be good in muffins - although I would recommend a binder like xanthan gum as this flour has no additives and is quite crumbly.

3.0 out of 5 stars This probiotic or Symprove - the jury's out, 7 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Like other reviewers here, I regularly take probiotics for irritable bowel. People often lack some gut bacteria after strong doses of antibiotics, and the result is that some foods cannot be digested in the small intestine and produce gas when they ferment. I take Symprove which is a water based liquid suspension of common gut bacteria. Symprove is a high quality product which has passed clinical trials and which had an immediate improving effect on my symptoms, which recur a few days after I stop taking Symprove.

I am giving this alternative probiotic a go because it is cheaper than Symprove - but after reading some of the other reviewers comments, I have some concerns about the quality of manufacture and whether enough of the bacteria really are live. The label claims to deliver 50 billion CFU (Colony Forming Units) but does not actually say whether this is per capsule or per bottle! By contrast, Symprove claims to deliver 10 billion CFU per dosing cup - and I am probably on a steady state dose of 5 billion CFU a day which is what I need to keep going.

Progress report: I have now taken this for three days running. On all three days I had a strong reaction - watery bowel movements within an hour of taking this and later in the day too. This suggests that there are definitely bacteria live in the pills - and hopefully my gut flora are now more varied after three days, since there is a varied mix of bacteria listed as contents. But I have decided to stop taking this for a few days and see if my bowels settle down. Symprove has a gentler effect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Advice for non iPhone users, 7 Jun. 2016
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These are the latest headphones and they are advertising them on the pack as made especially for latest iPhone/iPad technology. But after a few experiments - see discussion below - I have got them working fine Bluetooth connected to my non trendy Nokia Lumia phone!

See Bose support: [...]
It was a puzzle for a while. Tip for idiots like me, the Bluetooth doesn't pair if you have the wire dangling from the headphone. I had to take that out of the headphones and then the Bluetooth pairing worked fine!
Tip for phones - go to Settings menu and turn Bluetooth on and off there.

It says on the pack it is designed for various iPhone6s and iPhone5s but doesn't mention iPhone 4s. The iPad it lists are iPad Pro, iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini, iPad (4th generation) and iPod touch (5th and 6th generation). But it's clearly not that fussy.

It also does fine wired with the wire they provide, just as a plug-in - I am getting good sound quality listening to music plugged into an ancient speaker linked to my Windows PC, and got great sound last night listening to BBC iPlayer on my Nokia smartphone.
