1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible, 13 Aug 2013

I usually love Philippa Gregory books and I eagerly anticipated this fifth book in the cousins war series. Having now read the novel I feel sorely let down. Poor characterisation, inaccurate history and page after page full of drudgery and boredom.

Don't bother with this novel even if you have loved Gregory's previous books. Try Elizabeth Chadwick instead, much more accurate history and much more exciting stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class, 31 July 2013
This review is from: Reconstructing Amelia (Paperback)
This is a first class novel from a brilliant new writer. The story twists and turns with pace and surprises hide around every corner. The characters are well thought out and most importantly they feel very real and identifiable. The story is harrowing and bitter sweet but the main theme of the book is love & hate. The author conveyed the many forms of love brilliantly and should be justly acknowledged for her intricate portrayal of teenage relationships.

A great read for teenage girls and young women although as a twenty-something guy I really enjoyed it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superb Novel!, 16 July 2013
This review is from: The Sea Sisters (Paperback)
I have to admit I picked this book up with some trepidation as a 26 year old male. It seemed to me from the cover and the synopsis that it was just another chick-lit book that I would discard after 50 dull pages. How wrong I was!!!

The characters stories are fascinating, intricate and multi-layered. The exotic locations featured in the novel were so well drawn that you felt you were there with Mia & Katie. The emotions in this book are felt solidly by the reader and you really begin to feel angry, sad, happy and sorry for all of the characters involved.

A flawless début novel!

The Summer Queen (Eleanor of Aquitaine trilogy)

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Class Historical Fiction, 25 Jun 2013
As a huge fan of Elizabeth Chadwick I pre-ordered my copy of The Summer Queen and was more than excited when it arrived on the day of release. The service from Amazon was faultless and the price more than competitive.

The story, as with all of Chadwick's books, is intricate, detailed and richly drawn. The characters leap off the page and the story lines are dramatic whilst sticking quite uniformly to known historical fact. This novel is more than just a work of fiction, it's a window into a world so distant in years yet so familiar in emotion.

Chadwick has done it once again. If I could give this book 10 stars I would.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great., 22 Jun 2013
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Having been a huge fan of the previous two editions of the game I pre-ordered Season 2013 and it arrived the day after release. The service from Amazon was faultless and the price of the game was competitive.

Within the game itself a new modern home screen gave good first impressions and upon starting a career everything seemed pretty much as in previous editions. As I began to play however the experience quickly went downhill. You are no longer awarded prize money from races as in previous editions so you have to choose between having no staff or going bankrupt really quickly. The players fitness and objectives tab is also disappointing and somewhat confusing. Sure all your favourite teams and riders are present and the graphics in 3D mode are very good but on the whole the game is nowhere near as good as its predecessors.

I really wanted to award 5 stars but quite disappointed.

I picked up this book with some trepidation because as a big fan of cycling I did not want to feel let down by a poorly written representation of my sport. I could not have been more surprised at how much I enjoyed the novel.

The love triangle at the heart of the story was handled with great realism and the story of Sophie's illness was both heartbreaking and empowering at the same time. The sport of cycling and it's physiology is rigorously and accuratly portrayed without becoming to cluncky and technical to disuade a wide readership.

This is profoundly human story and I would throughly reccommend it to anyone with or without a knowledge of cycling.
