5.0 out of 5 stars Scritch Scratch..., 26 Oct. 2015
An excellent adaption to an excellent book. Having been a huge fan of the books for many years with the characters now "old" friends, anticipation was high, but wow, no disappointment here. The subtle ever encroaching sense of a world spiralling faster and faster out of control..tiny threads of life (and death) becoming more and more entwined while others unravel, was perfectly portrayed. The lines of faith and spiritualism blurring as Merrily comes to terms with a new life and a new job..beautifully portrayed by an amazing cast of actors. Well worth watching again and again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Synchronous Chaos, 23 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As with all of Mr Rickman's books the clever plot setting and cumulative culmination of characters lives so far removed yet inextricably linked brings The Magus of Hay to life. I find myself with more questions than answers as always - "head into a pillow, screaming" sums up the sense of energy that comes from this and the other Merrily books - and without a doubt, this once again leaves you wanting more.
Magus is a rollercoaster of a book and is well deserving of the 5 stars. I'd read many comments about some of the key characters being missing this time - but actually not having them in, added, in some ways to the chaos - everything thrown in the air, giving that sense of a more damaged, and less predictable outcome.
I don't need to discuss the plot in detail, as its fairly well documented, but if you're part hooked on the description then I can guarantee you won't be disappointed! Superb!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable!!, 13 April 2011
One of the best series of books I have ever read, this first book in the series grabs you from the start and draws you into a fascinating world of mystery, suspense, angst, border folklore, the supernatural and so much more! Merrily's life hasn't been an easy one, and now a single parent and new vicar to Ledwardine, a quiet village on the Herefordshire / Welsh borders, its not going to get any easier. The twists and turns are cleverly interwoven, leaving you wondering even as the book ends. Phil has a brilliance with words, bringing the characters to life so easily, that you will be hungry for the next books in this series.
