Have been waiting for a thriller/crime writer to challenge Jo Nesbo and along comes Pierre Lemaitre. Oh what a great book. Full of twists and turns with a tremendous central figure and a glorious Fraggle Rock team to go with our diminutive hero. Really is a book that you have to keep reading. And not all crime. A really interesting and poignant back story. If you enjoy Nesbo or Michael Connelly, read Lemaitre. Now.

Another beautiful offering. McCall Smith keeps this series going with calm continuity. The characters continue to grow and develop into people we have come to love and even admire. The introduction of the author of the ladies' detective manual was masterly. Once you have started this series there is no way of stopping.

I so. Enjoyed Emporer's Children that I had no hesitation in buying this novel. Like other reviewers I really enjoyed the first two thirds of the book but I really wanted more out of the final third. But then everything about Nora's life was dull. She was a failure on all fronts of her life. The big reveal which we'd all been waiting for neatly summed up Nora's failure to fulfill herself in a meaningful way. Thought this was a rewarding book though and well worth the effort. If you like Anne Tyler you'd enjoy this novel.

Another masterpiece from Jo Nesbo. His two standalone novels are really very good. You may miss Harry but Simon was a superb replacement. Nesbo includes all the twists and turns as well as high emotion you now expect from this gifted writer. Sit back and enjoy this tale of revenge and atonement.

What a let down. Simply can't believe some of my favourite writers really thought this was such a good novel. Unbelievable, poorly written and extremely tedious. And after all the intrigue the story was wrapped and tied up within a couple of pages! Ridiculous. Don't waste your time just read Le Carre, or Kerr or Nesbo.

Am working my way through the early Renko novels having read all the later ones. Simply superb. Soviet Union going through revolution in the 1990s as is poor Renko. Good to read now some 25 years after such world changing events.

Bought this after reading recommendations and thoroughly enjoyed it. Absolutely believable and intriguing. Enjoyed the Quebec setting, the village atmosphere and the very well drawn police chief. A book you really want to sit down and read in one session.

If you are a Jo Nesbo fan then this book met all your desires. Harry Hole must be the perfect detective ever written. You are always rooting for him and he always fails to deliver. Down and out, alcoholic, unreliable etc etc. But he can solve crimes even when everyone is against him. Nesbo says he knows when the series will end. Please not too soon.

Another great offering from Mr Connelly. Mickey Haller is a well created character, the Lincoln Lawyer. Intriguing tale although I get a little bit fed up with Haller's guilt trips and father of the year wannabe status. In the end I will always prefer the Bosch books as I feel the author is more at home in that scenario.

I love football but I simply couldn't get on with this warts and all book. Couldn't really believe in the writer although I understand he really is a footballer. Written in a rather amateur style which didn't help. Others enjoy but not for me.
