Lies and Death: Chief Inspector John Cummins (Detective Chief Inspector John Cummins Book 1)
Price: £1.54

3.0 out of 5 stars seriously no proof read?, 4 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Lots of spelling mistakes, missing words and missing punctuation which makes this quite an annoying read. Did nobody proof read it? Shame as not a bad story, though ending is a bit week, lacking imagination.

I use this nearly every day. Simple to use and clean. Not as good as an expresso machine but good enough and much less mess. Much much better than having to use that instant much. Easily the best £20 I've spent.

Fiddly to put up then when you use a hair dryer on it it shrinks and comes away from the tape. It is then impossible to re attach without any gaps. Then it just rips

3.0 out of 5 stars Should be 5 star, 29 Oct 2013
I've been a big fan of Information is Beautiful since the start. I still am a big fan. I bought this book a few years ago and have just re-opened it since. I was a bit disappointed with it initially.

It is full of great stuff but also full of not so great stuff. This lets it down.

Too many items miss the whole point of data visualisations/infographics - a picture paints a thousand words. A visualisation should be easy to understand, or understand without adding too much text, otherwise just have the text. Too many you would just look and go 'what the...I have no idea what this is trying to represent'

"The one machine" on page 90 is just awful. A table of data would have sufficed here. "Three's a magic number" on page 36 is just nonsense. There is no data to visualise here it is just a drawing, and not very interesting at that.

Data visualisation can have artistic qualities but should not be art itself because that is art.

Definitely buy the book. It is just a shame McCandless didn't take a less is more approach.

Windows Phone 7.5 Fundamentals
Windows Phone 7.5 Fundamentals
Price: £1.34

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't, 19 Mar 2012
This is the second time I've bought a silverlight show book. It will definitely be the last.

This book isn't even worth the cheap price.

There is no flow or reasoning to this book. It literally is a small collection of not very good tutorials. They don't link together or even cover the fundamentals (starts with Database, then launchers and choosers, then accessing the camera, then playing music, then programming web sockets).

Launchers and choosers are about the only fundamental here the rest are specifics or advanced.

You won't get an understanding of how to develop for the windows phone by any stretch of the immagination....

Getting Ready for Microsoft Silverlight Exam 70-506
Getting Ready for Microsoft Silverlight Exam 70-506
Price: £4.28

2.0 out of 5 stars Shoddy work, 6 Nov 2011
When paying for a book, as opposed to using a free on-line tutorial, I expect that at least the basics are covered e.g. that sentences are grammatically correct and understandable.

There is a real lack of professionalism to this item. It really is just the on-line tutorials.

No effort has been made to tidy these up. There is a lot of repetition of examples and some of the examples are really poor.

Not sure there is a lot of value in buying this... not at this price anyway

Ok, this book is cheap and is probably good value for putting on the coffe table so as guests think you are a little interesting.

This book is not, however, a deep understanding and explanation of what information design is.

The author seems lacking in real world experience and the book has a feel of an undergraduate paper. It tries to cover too many things. Most of the case studies are pointless

Half the diagrams aren't viewable as they are too small, many are cluttered and don't add anymore meaning that the same amount of text would - surely this is completely missing the point?

A lot of the case studies don't actually tell us anything and are purely name dropping - Morgan Stanley for example. Often there is just image after image - where is the value?

Where is the problem-solution example with a detailed explanation? Information design is not about graphic design it is about adding value to information and ultimately, the end user.

As a data visualisation specialist i have been battling for years trying to convince various managers of the benefits of good information design and visualisation and that it is not fluffy nonsense. People like this author make our jobs ten times harder through

If you are looking for a book on information architecture and web usability then you should start with Don't Make Me Think by Steve Krug.
