4.0 out of 5 stars New Series?, 26 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We bought DCI Banks Series 3 thinking it was new --- it is advertised as released in 2015 --- only to discover that we had seen the three episodes at an earlier date. Other reviewers helped us understand what probably happened. We saw them on TV some time last year (?) but dvds were not then made available. Not remembering having seen the episodes we then bought the newly released dvds unaware that it was the "dvds" that were new and not their content.

We've also just discovered that an additional two episodes we had not seen earlier (from the same Series 3?) are being shown now with much fanfare on our local public tv station. I assume at some point that these additional episodes will also be placed on discs and put on sale for public purchase. How will they be marketed? As DCI Banks Series 4? Caveat emptor!

The episodes on the discs in this Series 3 are excellent regardless of when you've seen them. Unfortunately the apparently devious marketing strategy taints the overall good feeling that I usually have after watching Peter Robinson's work on TV. Before you buy check and make sure you don't already have these episodes lying around on your TV bookshelf.

Simply outstanding. The drama of history delivered with good writing, good acting and good directing. . We especially enjoyed the extra feature where the playwright and historian talked about the episode's content and how it shaped what was ultimately seen by the viewer. You don't have o be a history buff to enjoy this program. Television at its best.

Interesting program. It has a compelling rhythm to it that one doesn't often see in television drama. Acting, stories and settings are excellent. Hope there's going to be more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 31 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Quirke [DVD] (DVD)
We expected a forensic type drama with Quirke as the solver of a medical puzzle. We had no idea that the stories and characters were based on a dark, somber and bleak Irish novel that focused on the repressive, destructive influence of the Catholic Church on Irish culture before Vatican II and John 23rd. Needless to say we were disappointed. Byrne is a a fine actor.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Postage, 4 Aug. 2014

That we thoroughly disliked it it pretty much covers it. Implausible. Improbable. Incoherent. No redeeming social values. It appeared to be slapped together with trite, contrived, stereotyped conflicts and with writing and acting that would have embarassed a high school drama class. We watched the first hour only. Saw no purpose in watching the rest. Disappointed. The reviews gave us no hint of what was to come.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Agree with Chrissie, 7 Feb. 2013
I totally agree with Chrissie's three star review. The anachronistic dialogue, stilted writing and poor editing (particularly punctuation) had a negative impact on my enjoyment of the story. Like Chrissie, I was also put off by the hero as ". . . a bit of a thug" despite the story's interesting premise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Band is Great and the Music is Good Too, 25 Oct. 2011
This is a recording of Christmas Music. So why do I listen to it throughout the year? The music played by this Brass Band is not seasonal. The musicianship of the players from tubas to soprano cornets is outstanding and the musical arrangements were obviously created by someone who understands how to get the best out of each instrument and how to put them into a musical package that is appealing to the listener. Beyond that the direction is superb. This band has been well schooled in working together so that the dynamics of the music are treated with respect. This attention to musical detail is not something created by an engineer at a sound board. If you believe that if you've heard one Brass Band you've heard them all you're in for a real surprise and a genuine musical treat that you'll come back to again and again throughout the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Can't Beat Talent!, 21 Sept. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)

We've known Martin Shaw from other British TV productions, e.g., P.D. James, and he is good. This made it a potentially worthwhile purchase. We weren't wrong and the DVD even has subtitles. The whole production is excellent and we've preordered Series two.

For those of you who read this who live in Region 1 (NTSC) let me encourage you to buy a multi-region DVD player - Amazon U.S. has them - so you can enjoy these Region 2 (PAL) DVDs some of which are only available at Amazon UK. You may even find that the costs of buying them from Amazon UK and having them shipped to your US address via Royal Mail is cheaper than buying them in the US.
