1.0 out of 5 stars 6 ordered... 2 received! :@, 27 Oct. 2013

At first I thought that I must have miss-read the listing, but nope, it says they'll deliver 6 cells but only 2 (torn off from a larger pack) were delivered. Bad form, buy from someone else.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun play on the genre, 1 July 2013

Dunn does bloody silly very well. This is a fun short read poking at the superheroes genre, particularly Superman. The Common Man is everything that Superman is except that his education tape, played as a child inside the escape pod from his doomed planet, gets stuck so his life on Earth is alien, he's uneducated, naive and not loved by the media.

Dunn spins this silly character in a series of sketch-like chapters filled with social commentary- as 'Red Son' portrays if superman had landed in soviet Russia, this is what would happen if he'd landed in a carry-on film. If you want a quick escapist giggle to read on the train while you're trying to forget the rest of the universe then this is a good punt

The Hydrogen Sonata (A Culture Novel)

3.0 out of 5 stars I cared about the outcome about as much as the characters did, 11 Jan. 2013
I'm a big fan of Banks, and this ticks a lot of the standard boxes: well written, fantastic descriptions, multi-threaded storyline, great! And the topic was good too, tackling Subliming as the main theme and a big equivitech, Culture-friendly civilisation as the setting. Great, haven't seen that before...
Unfortunately I was left feeling like almost everything else had been seen before. The main sympathetic character has nothing particularly interesting about her (just some casual swearing and an interesting un-conquerable musical instrument to make her seem interesting), no real sense of series progression, and, worst of all, the main quest was just inconsequential. I was up to the last page waiting for the twist, for the reveal that other civilizations thought the Culture had overstepped this time, the hint of consequences, the existence of hidden Culture agents, the fall out of the Scavengers, or that the message was encoded into the Hydrogen Sonata all the time (with the hints that it was written to mathematically reflect higher dimensional Marain language at around the same time as the forming of the Culture, I was really waiting for that one)... nope, nothing. It just ends. I didn't really understand why the villain politician did half the stuff he did either it just seemed to be an excuse to be gratuitous.
Anyway, sorry to be negative Mr. Banks, but I have slightly higher expectations of your good self!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best dumb read you can get, 22 Nov. 2012

If you're a fan of sophisticated characters, subtle motives or exquisite dialogue in a carefully paced intelligent whodunnit then read something else. If however, you want to have great fun with the unashamed idiocy of this messed up cop drama (think Sin City without the production values or the transcript of a sedated Raymond Chandler trying hard to resist torture) then this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Wodehouse-esq romp of fun, 18 Feb. 2012

A brilliantly verbose, charming and nicely paced story of silliness and intelligence blended into one. Some great laugh out loud moments, occasional use of the kindle dictionary and nicely written flowing trains of thought that keep you smiling through every chapter. It deserves a place in everyone's Kindle

Brilliant! At first I fell into the trap of just listening to the White/Jones tracks (which are cracking) but after repeated listenings I've decided the whole thing is beautifully crafted. You've just got to let those big harmonies fill you up and imagine the forthcoming mexican standoff.
