Superb musicianship all round and really atmospheric interpretations ranging from the tenderness of Siegfried Idyll to the power of the Dutchman and the drama of the Tanhauser. The Vienna Philharmonic are outstanding as always, but it is a huge bonus to hear the 19year old Roland Berger's sizzling power cutting through the sound of the rest of the horn section. This must be a star buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Devotion versus Performance, 30 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Bach: St John Passion (Audio CD)
This is a truly wonderful performance all round. It is above all truly devotional. The feeling is of people who know the text and sing/play accordingly-and they are not scared to move slowly unlike many modern "authentic" performances-all very preoccupied with performance attributes.Peter Schreier is fine as always,Theo Adam is fragile and utterly right.Fine recording.John Butt ,a superb musician of whom I am an enormous fan, works too hard at recreating "authenticity"and at the end of the day,for me,creates a "performance",wonderful and exciting, but misses the mark.Sorry John!
