3.0 out of 5 stars Not the full spark, 4 Feb 2008
On one level, this is "cute" - lots of very pretty men, mostly undressed, good voyer material. And the show itself does attempt to put many issues facing gay men into the arena, in an often quite humourous way: how guys will eye each other up (and compete!) in the gymn, the longing for an intimate connection, even a perky little pornstar from Illonois. The main gripe is that filming a live show, no matter how fancy the camera work, doesn't quite have the impact of seeing it in the flesh (no pun intended). The music etc is very "typical broadway show" style and somewhat predicatable: I was debating if it deserved a two star rating rather than three, but it does give a few laughs and is quite entertaining, even it it doesn't quite get there in the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a movie, 25 July 2007
This review is from: Garcon Stupide [2004] [DVD] (DVD)
This is a movie that manages to combine art house with sexy, following the self discovery of a young man about what it means to really be alive. It also has a certain enigma about it... probably becasue you are trying to figure out if the main character is as the title suggests, a bit dim, or a (typical) male who thinks and sees the world in black and white, but them discovers there are shades of grey. Worth a look.

1.0 out of 5 stars So bad its funny, 11 July 2007
From the very opening sequences you can tell this is worse that a "B" grade movie - more like an F! The camera work is clumsy, the sound terrible (was it shot on a home camcorder?). At one point shoddy editing means you hear the same lines twice - in different locations that follow each other. The acting goes from almost wooden to slightly deranged, truly the worst combination of psychobabel meeting cliches. But, if you find a truely awful movie can provide some laughs and groans, get it!! It is so terrible it's funny.

1.0 out of 5 stars Chicken Tikka Masala, 11 May 2007
What a disappointment. It had some great (and well known) actors and a good (if not very orginal) theme, but this is very much an example of what sets a "B" grade movie apart from something truley superb. Bad lighting, clumsy script, poor character development, awful music... it's all there. Worth comparing to a classic movie by Ang Lee on a similar theme called "The Wedding Banquet" - poles apart. It goes to show what a difference good directing and producing makes.

3.0 out of 5 stars A complex little number, 23 Jan 2007
This review is from: Wild Side [2004] [DVD] (DVD)
This is a film that takes a while to figure out, mainly as the story flicks from the past to the present and back again... but if you persist, it is an intirguing story that is not the norm. I was left wondering what some scenes really meant (and in this way it is a little too "arty" to be immediately accessible to a broad audience). Worth checking out.
