The Honour and the Shame

5.0 out of 5 stars The privilage and the honour, 6 Feb 2008
This book is a warts and all story of ten years in a soldiers life
not any soldier but a vc
the action is bloody gritty and brutal, with a epilaloge to boot

The writing is so addictive that I cut through the pages in 2 nights
gasping for more

2.0 out of 5 stars concise history, 2 Feb 2008
This books as much a review of the treaty than a blow by blow account of collin's life

crowded with facts it quickly swamps the reader and a feeling of when does the interesting bit begin washes over

obivously the last section provides this with the ambush

it left me with feeling that those who live by the sword often die of it
collins was no saint - his death may even have saved lives up north who knows

1.0 out of 5 stars oneliners?, 28 Dec 2007
This review is from: Bankrolling Basra (Paperback)
Read this in a couple of days its seems to be full on one line stories that have little continuity

There was no build up to anything dramatic just a book full of huge figures. I could have got the same feeling reading my companies annual finance report complete with all the interdeparmental in fighting

4.0 out of 5 stars Insight to hell, 12 Nov 2007
This book is a lesson on how absolute power corrupts absolutley
on how you can be denounced and dissapear into a system without hope

brutal tale of life in a North korean gulag
as a visitor to its nieghbour South korea many times, it gave me a shudder to read how in a country without checks and balances, anthing can happen to you
for little or no reason.

3.0 out of 5 stars easy to read, 27 Oct 2007
this type of book is one you can go through in a couple of nights
liked the format the book really comes alive with the stories behind the executions
though some of his opinions are a little self serving

1.0 out of 5 stars very dissapointing, 19 Oct 2007
I bought this book expecting some first hand close quater action, what I got was a story of one drunken party after another.
The title of the book suggests clandestine operations with the SAS
at no point I the book did I see any interarction with the sas and never read the word sas or as they like to call themselves "the regiment"

looking for some action? give this one a miss

4.0 out of 5 stars History revisited, 11 Sep 2007
great read from much reasearch that broght a hell of a story together
my only wish would have been to have surviving details on the rest of his life

even his death date seems to be lost
yet another succesful book from this author

3.0 out of 5 stars no forgotten soldier....., 16 July 2007
although undoubtably the author saw some close quater combat. 90% of the memoirs are "war from the command post"

The lack of actual combat detail leaves much of the book wanting
could almost have been written by a historian

4.0 out of 5 stars slam dunk, 6 May 2007
This book turns in to quite a page turner

the author writes with loads of emotion making the conversations a huge part of the appeal

nice begining, then setups the story with recalls in the middle and slam dunks you for the last quarter with thriller momment after thiller momment

great read!!
