5.0 out of 5 stars Voyager continues, 22 April 2014

I always thought it a bad decision when Janeway was killed in an earlier book in this series. I'm not sure novelizations of TV series should do this - although of course it can happen within the series, as with Dax in DS9. I also thought that the resurrection of Janeway in the last book was very contrived - with one bound Jack was free etc. However the series has moved on, and I think it's good that Beyer is addressing the psychological issues surrounding Janeway's return. The characters are well realised and the story is interesting. Look forward to how it develops.

I first came across this book at the library but it is so useful I bought one. If you're stuck in a rut with your slow cooker, and don't have much time, this is a really great book to have. I look forward to trying many more of the recipes

5.0 out of 5 stars J A Jance does it again, 2 Dec 2010

I've been following the Joanna Brady series from the beginning and really enjoying them. Jance has a wonderful sense of place so you know where the characters are going and what it's like in their communities. The Beaumont series is quite different - written in the first person for one thing - and Jance gets round the problem in her joint Beaumont/Brady novels by shifting the perspective periodically. I was dismayed in the first of the crossover titles when the two characters shared a post-battle moment of attraction. It didn't gel for me and would have spoiled the very good relationships they have been given in their solo books. I'm glad the auhtor decided not to take it any further.
As always a good read, and the subject of young immigrant women being preyed upon is very pertinent to our times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nigel Hess does it again, 27 Sep 2010

As a fan of Ladies in Lavender, I was delighted to learn Nigel Hess had written a piano concerto. It's as melodic as his film music, and when you learn that it was written in honour of the Queen Mother it becomes easy to understand the 'story'. My only regret is that it's a short piece about 25 minutes and not coupled with anything else.

5.0 out of 5 stars The other Mendelssohn, 26 April 2010

Fanny Mendelssohn may have lived in her brother's shadow (and like him died way too young) but her music is beautiful and well-worth listening to. Try it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boldly going further, 10 Mar 2010

The new Star Trek Vanguard series takes the best from the original series and has developed a new set of characters with a strong story arc. All our old favourites, Klingons, Vulcans and the like, with some lesser known species such as the Tholians. Different authors are writing the series but this one by David Mack is particularly good. Can be read separately but best to read in order.

5.0 out of 5 stars At the edge of the final frontier, 15 Dec 2009

I'd read a couple of others in this series, so it was good to finally get hold of number one. I do recommend reading in the right order if you can, as the characters and the over-arching stories are complex. David Mack is a great writer with an excellent feel for original series charcters as well as many new ones. A good addition to the Star Trek universe.
