4.0 out of 5 stars Good televsion adaption of Frankenstein, 27 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An ambitious attempt by American televsion to mount a big production based loosely on the classic novel by Mary Shelley.
It is a very handsome piece with a fine script by Christopher Isherwood no less. Leonard Whiting as Dr. Frankenstein is backed by a full star cast- perhaps one of the finest ever assembled for a horror film.
Alas this film is never shown today, so one should be grateful to this Region 1 release, which although offering little in the way of extras (well it is a very long film) is very reasonably priced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps Fassbinder's best film?, 27 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I cannot add much to some of the excellent reviews that have already been said about this film. It blends perfectly Douglas Sirk like melodrama with important human issues in a very real way.
Needless to say it is one of my favourite films and this Dvd version has some excellent bonus material also.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Tomorrow People, 26 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This seventies Sci-fi series for children is still very watchable today. The Doomsday men is perhaps one of the best Tomorrow People stories, although it is slightly let down by an over reoccuring joke about a traffic warden and a disappearing van (as stated in other reviews).
The commentaries by ex-members of the cast are always entertaining and make the Dvds worth getting (particularly for the very small price that they are currently available!)

5.0 out of 5 stars The great Brel's early works, 26 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Je T'aime (Audio CD)
This triple CD of Jaques Brel's early works (his first four albums & some additional tracks) is terrific value for money.
Brel's stunning song writing does occasionally shine through here, but even better was to come.
This does include the orginal version of Ne Me Quitte Pas and La Mort which would later be transformed brillantly into My Death by Scott Walker & David Bowie. But there are truly many worthy songs here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the full Fascination, 26 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fascination [DVD] (DVD)
This is one of Jean Rollin's more successful erotic Vampire tales. It features the very wonderful Brigitte Lahaie at her most seductive.
However I am most disappointed that it is not the full version. Why the 80 second credit sequence with Brigitte & friend dancing to a gramophone record has been removed is beyond me. Particularly as it is there on a much older videotape (also by Redemption) that I have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Et Moi Et Moi Et Moi, 7 Oct 2011
This review is from: Et Moi Et Moi Et Moi (Audio CD)
I concur with the above excellent review and cannot add much to it. Jacques Dutronc is a great musician, composing a truly wonderful and witty series of pop tunes from the sixties onwards. This compliation is a good taster of his early works. These tracks starting with Dutronc's signature tune Et Moi Et Moi Et Moi to me are amongst the best sixties pop music recorded not just in France, but anywhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quatermass parts 1 & 2, 7 Oct 2011
This is a good double bill released by Icons pictures, who recently botched up Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter. But this is not such a bad job. The main problem is the pre-credit sequence of Quatermass 2, which is extremely snowy. But it does improve once the credits roll and maintains a reasonable standard through most of the film. Quatermass Experiment does have some flickering (one noticeable scene in particular) but is a fairly decent picture for most of its length.
These films appear fairly modest now, but they did put Hammer films on the map before they blazed into colour with their gothic horrors. Of the two, I think Quatermas 2 stands up particularly well.
For the budget price, getting these two films is not a bad deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Robert Bresson's tribute to Saint Joan, 6 Oct 2011
Robert Bresson's account of the trial of St.Joan , which uses actual recorded text from the time. It is a sombre, austere version full of inner turmoil rather than the harrowing naked emotion shown in Carl Dreyer's masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc.
There are some good extras too (to make up for the short length of the film itsel - just 61 minutes) including interviews with Robert Bresson and the lady who played Joan - Florence Carrez. Also there's an excellent documentary from French Television, discussing the facts and the myths behind Joan of Arc. The picture quality is very good too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Captain Kronos is not shown in a good light, 6 Oct 2011
I wish to comment on the recent edition of Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter which has been released by Icon Pictures. I can only echo what some of the negative reviews have said. The picture quality is poor to say the least. The colours are washed out, grainy and far too dark for most of the film. There are aso frequent flickering figures throghout a large part of it too. This is such a shame because to me Captain Kronos is a wonderful swashbuckleing Horror romp - amongst Hammer's finest films. To see a better copy of this, one needs to get the older edition which is coupled with Frankenstein and the monster from Hell (which admittedly costs alot more money!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dodes'ka-Den, 26 May 2009
Dodes'ka-Den shows the everyday lives of slum dwellers on the outskirts of Toyko. They get through their difficult daily existance through dreams, alcohol and local gossip. It was made at a difficult time in Akira Kurosawa's career and life and its financial failure (amongst other things) led to a suicide attempt. The film mixies social realism with dark humour.

Dodes'ka-Den is not up to the standards of Kurosawa's truly great films. Some of the humour did to me fall abit flat at times and perhaps even on the odd occasion there is a little sentimentality. However, the film shows the characters in all their nobility and flaws with affection. This was Kurosawa's first film in colour and its saturated with distinct bright colours, within very dour subject matter.

Despite some flaws Kurosawa's humanitarism shines through. Its no masterpiece but it is the work of a master.

Criterion have produced their usual excellent standards with this Dvd. There is a very interesting 36 minute documentary but no commentary. I am grateful to them for releasing what is after all, one of Kurosawa's rarer films.
