2.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear....., 12 Oct. 2012

This review is from: The Players [DVD] (DVD)
I had really high hopes for this film; i adore Gilles Lellouche and was very impressed with Jean Dujardin in both The Artist and the OSS films. However, this film doesn't hang together very well: It is a series of stories about a range of characters, played by the two male leads, all dealing with the theme of male infidelity. This sounds promising, but ends up being a bit of a mess. It didn't work very well as a comedy, nor did it offer enough insight into the issue to be a serious piece.
The acting, at least, was quite good - the two guys looked like they were having a ball while filming and both are attractive and charismatic.
So, if you're after something light (but not overly-funny) featuring two good-looking Frenchmen, then this is for you. Otherwise, i'd say give it a miss.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous collection, 20 Sept. 2011
I don't write too many reviews, but after seeing that the only reader review was a 'one star' i thought it best to actually review the product and its content - something the previous reviewer hadn't done. Amazon's product blurb was quite clear that this collection was an omnibus of two previous collections. The few new articles added are a bonus. Lots of readers buy items based on readers 'star' ratings - giving this book a 'one star' rating is misleading if the reviewer's only gripe was with the fact that he/she had read much of the material before.
Now, to the actual item: written in The Dowager Duchess' inimitable style, it is upper-class chatty and always entertaining. If you like lively, witty prose with lots of social history and incisive observations then you will love this. I certainly did.

4.0 out of 5 stars When is it too late to start again?, 8 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This film about a young man who has chosen to live outside the law. A chance meeting with his old piano professor leads him to take up playing piano again; something he had given up after the death of his mother. In Hollywood, this might lead to him being a virtuoso and gaining world renown, overcoming all obstacles on the way. However, this is a very french film (despite being a remake of 'Fingers' - an american production) and so it doesn't exactly turn out that way.
Great performances, wonderful music, and images of a modern multicultural Paris make this a pleasure to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Which side will you choose?, 8 Jan. 2010
This was quite a strange book to read in a way; because of the structure (two parallel stories featuring the central characters), it was necessary to read the chapters in twos. Having said that, i loved it. I read it voraciously, dying to find out which scenario was the one that was actually true. Sadly, i had come down on the side which didn't win out...
I found this book easier to 'get into' than some of the author's previous works. She often writes in a detached style which is difficult to engage with. I found this one to be different in that respect. In any case, i loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars So good..., 7 May 2009
This review is from: Open Hearts [DVD] (DVD)
I watched this film this morning after having it sit in my dvd collection for several months. I'm so sorry that i didn't view it sooner. It was incredibly moving without being mawkish, and realistically depicted how seemingly good relationships can fall apart through changed circumstances. All the leads were excellent and the 'affair' was handled very well and didn't make villains of anybody. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting fiction debut, 21 Jun. 2008
This review is from: Attachment (Hardcover)
After reading 'Attachment', i can't understand where the previous reviewer is coming from. The book was beautifully paced, with vivid descriptions of each different setting. I didn't find the main character to be particularly self-absorbed; certainly no more so than anybody would be in her situation. A woman who has a serious health worry and possibly a straying husband is bound to be a bit preoccupied with her own situation. I couldn't put this book down, and read it over one day and night. It is definitely on the shortlist for my book of the year.
