Worth it for the bonus E.P alone, 10 April 2007
If this is the same version I have, it contains four extra tracks at the end, the "Tony Fletcher Walked on Water" E.P., recorded a matter of weeks before the band broke up and a suggestion that they had finally found some momentum after years of label disputes. Though more or less a demo recording, it brims with magic and the tension of their best work. Ironically, there's also a sense of optimism in places that gives new colour to the songs--the exhortation in the chorus of "Denims and Curls" the most obvious example: "Where in the world is your inspiration / To say the things you're aching to say / Wherever that turns out to be / Go there this day".
The main part of the album is a band-selected best of, and is perhaps not the most balanced choice of their songs. The oddest inclusions are "In Shreds" and "Nostalgia", recorded with Steve Lillywhite during their ill-starred sojourn with CBS and--so I'd thought--far from being band favourites considering how uncharacteristic they are of the later songs. However, it's a good place to get started and the only way to pick up "Tony Fletcher"; if you like it, move on and buy the three studio albums.
