Brilliant service, rapid safe delivery. Laptop worked straight away. Just amazing value. Why buy a new laptop when refurbished is so good? Reassuring 12 month warranty as well. Thinking now, should I buy another, having saved so much money?

5.0 out of 5 stars What is going on inside the Doctor?, 4 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Why should you read this book?

This is an open honest and raw account of what it feels like to be Doctor. The author re-emphasises the central need for doctors to know who the patient is, before moving on to attempts at diagnosis and treatment recommendations. The author describes the joy of successful professional relationships with patients, as well as the anxiety, fear, guilt and depression that can so easily seep into a clinician. The writing style is simple, the stories are true, the truths are universal.

Who should read this book?

Obviously Doctors and Medical Students should read this book to remind themselves of why they went into medical practice, as well as to enable them to fight for their patients' best interests. Anyone non clinical involved in managing clinicians and clinical work should read this, to gain insight into what is going on inside those pesky clinicians' lives! Patients and carers can easily see the complexity and human fallibility of ethical Doctors work.

How long will it take to read? I think it took me about 6 hours to read this book. I found it fascinating and did not want to put it down.

Practical Patient Safety
Practical Patient Safety
by John Reynard
Edition: Paperback
Price: £40.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Reading for Improving Patient Safety at Frontline, 11 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Patient Safety remains a nebulous concept for most Doctors and Nurses in Hospitals in the UK. This book provides plenty of real life examples from hospitals as well as examples from non medical work environments. There is a strong emphasis on the need to structure workplace conversations and "read back" i.e. very cheap changes that can cause important improvements in the safety of our work. I recommend it to anyone new to Patient Safety, or anyone who has struggled with wordy difficult Patient Safety books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now we know what ails the NHS - lack of Intelligent Kindness, 15 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is a brilliant argument about what has gone wrong in the NHS since the Thatcher led reforms, which have been fully supported by every subsequent Government. The authors argue that we have moved from a market economy to a market society, where everything is measured in monetary terms. The NHS was founded to support the whole of society, to provide succour regardless of personal wealth or poverty, race, creed or sex. Kindness cannot be measured in terms of money, and has now been allowed to drain away, leaving unkind situations so graphically reported by the Francis Inquiry. Intelligent Kindness is not just passing sympathy, it should be at the core of clinical working. We have slipped so far, it will be a hard journey back to recognising kindness and patient's autonomy as core values in healthcare. It is very important that this book has been written. Now move on to reading "Overdiagnosed" ....

5.0 out of 5 stars essential reading for all doctors, 9 April 2013

This review is from: Overdiagnosed (Kindle Edition)
Brilliant exposure of how we doctors have succeeded in making people with the greatest life expectancy in the history of mankind feel ill and at risk of health disasters. Of course the book also exposes the Big Pharma companies and politicians. Every doctor and medical student should read this book. Once finished move onto "Intelligent Kindness'

1.0 out of 5 stars Looked good - terrible packaging - returned, 17 Aug. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Arrived in terrible packaging - no real protection for product - just one layer of cardboard wrapping - no polystyrene - last item unpacked was the top of the unit - badly damaged - had to return it and Amazon had no more in stock. It looked great, but very badly let down by packaging. Only buy one if Amazon can guarantee that packaging has been improved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black humour, full of humanity, 25 Jun. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Essential reading for all medical students and doctors of all ages - black humour steeped in humanity - when you are in hospital as a patient, hope for "The Fat Man" who relies on your body to heal itself. Watch out for nearly all others. The humour was the only way to survive the system. A classic - generally voted near the top of lists of books to read by doctors - so we recognise ourselves in there somewhere - and of course all our colleagues! Trust me you need a doctor with a sense of humour!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why is this not famous and in print? Steinbeck moulded with Hemingway?, 4 Jun. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this after reading the autobiography of General Sir Mike Jackson, who recommended it. This is so easy to read - as human and clear as Steinbeck, as spare and stark as Hemingway. The war is off stage, ordinary real imperfect life loving people are on stage. Death and pain drift in like a cold fog. How this anti-war book was allowed to surface in the USA must be a mystery. As good a novel as "All Quiet on the Western Front" is as a film.
