2.0 out of 5 stars Has a huge design flaw..., 10 Dec. 2013
Got one of these, but sent it back due to a huge design flaw.

Unlocking requires a simultaneous long press of two buttons - pretty much impossible for older folks to understand and accomplish with arthritic fingers.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK, couple of niggles, 10 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Got this for elderly relative. Mostly good, a few thoughts -

+ Should be a lanyard in the box so old folks can put around neck and not risk falling out of pocket while fumbling for change for the bus
+ Very oddly, can't find a way of showing text on plain black screen - there's no obvious way of switching off silly wallpaper
+ The 'Phone Security' just asks for PIN on startup - would be nice of a PIN code could be used to stop old folks from tinkering with settings
+ The SOS alarm is decently loud and gives the option to cancel if pressed by mistake before SMS get sent out
+ FM Radio is useless
+ Keypad lock is a slide on side of phone, not a simultaneous key-press the old folks can't manage
+ Two programmable buttons which activate on long-press, handy for carer and family member as alternative to SOS button

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, loads of Smart features, SD upscaling mediocre, 2 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this to upgrade a Sony Bravia KDL22E5300 22-inch Widescreen which back in the day (2009) cost a fair whack but is now superseded on streaming and has no Freeview HD.

I looked at similar sized Sony TV but they wanted silly money for far less features, although I'd really prefer a Bravia panel.

In essence, this is a computer with a user-interface optimised watching TV so it has loads of options but equally can be confusing at times.

My thoughts on the Samsung -

+ Inbuilt Wi-fi without needing a ££ dongle is a big plus, no need to drop a LAN cable into bedroom
+ In white with the oversize perspex bezel it's unobtrusive in bedroom/kitchen
+ Easy set-up, I was connected to wi-fi and scanned Freeview without opening the manual
+ Loads of 'Smart' features inc. all the on-line catch-up apps and plenty of apps for Facebook etc. I guess inside the TV is really a PC.
+ 5V USB socket for charging phones
+ No screen pixelisation on Freeview HD even though my aerial is in the loft
+ I think it has about 2GB of RAM for downloading apps;
+ 'Legacy' connectors for games machines (SCART, component) plus HDMI
+ Freeview HD on the HD panel gives decent picture quality (once adjusted)
+ Can record shows to USB
+ Easy to select YouTube videos from iOS and then stream to TV
+ Remote control app for iPad

Negatives

- It's not dual-tuner so you can't record a programme to USB while watching another
- Sony has a more intuitive way of setting picture options for different inputs
- For initial setup, plugging in a USB mouse makes using the UI a lot quicker
- The 'social TV' idea doesn't really work in practice IMHO
- It didn't automatically replace SD channels with HD equivalents in channel guide
- Security concerns about linking all your logins for Facebook etc. to Samsung logib
- SD channel upscaling to the HD panel is nothing special,
- Out the box, Contrast is set to 100% with Dynamic processing On which looks horrid

Other points

o It's a 75mm VESA mount (see http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/customer-media/permalink/mo3CYPJ24N66W5E/B00BXDK1CU/ref=cm_ciu_images_pl_link)
o Uses an external power-brick, which makes neat position on wall a bit more tricky
o Supposedly Samsungs 'phone home' with every detail about how you use the TV, what channels you watch etc.

And also brilliant customer service from Amazon, after Yodel let them down on delivery.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather thin sound IMHO, 1 Dec. 2013
Despite having this as a hi-rez download, I found the sound balance rather thin.

Compared to The Academy of Ancient Music Chamber Ensemble with Antony Pay on Basset Clarinet, this recording just never lifts the heart as Mozazt should

2.0 out of 5 stars Bit of a lemon, 30 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Tales of Us (Audio CD)
You spend 44 minutes expecting something to happen, the gears to change, the pace to pick up. It never does.

I understand this is a semi-concept album, a sort of homage to Holst's The Planets.

Maybe it works if you've taken mood altering drugs?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, if you can get at right price, 30 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Picked this up from £15.99 in the Black Friday sale, TBH that feels the right price.

Took minutes to install, but note the included fixings are for solid masonry walls - I used my own expanding metal anchors for plasterboard.

I positioned mine behind the kitchen door but above a radiator so it's unobtrusive in the kitchen.

In the closed position, it's easy to hang tea-towels over the bars. Pulled out, it took several bath towels which had been spun at 1600 without any problems. It moves from side to side slightly but it can take some weight.

Downside of course is drying indoor can create condensation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, 24 Nov. 2013

I used these in a bathroom, replacing a bodge-job of 12V lights with open backs. IP65, fire-rated with bulb for under a tenner is good value!

Fitting I found OK, although the cover for the mains lead was just clip-on plastic. The side springs are OK in holding the flange tight against the ceiling and stopping draughts from the loft but it helps if you can get into the loft to make final adjustments. The face of the bulb is close to the glass cover, so you get good spread of light into the room.

With 50W halogens these do get very hot, so ensure you keep air space around them and don't cover with insulation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good dress watch, although strap is a let-down, 23 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This could be a modern Omega Seamaster DeVille, very much a dress watch being slim and without a date complication.

Ignore what Amazon says, this is a manual-wind watch - one reason it's so thin is omission of rotor for automatic winding. It's a Swiss ETA 2801-2 movement.

Adopting the design aesthetic of Max Bill, this has a minimalist, sparse design in the Bauhaus style being adopted by Nomos and other German watchmakers.

At the currently unfashionable size of 34mm it looks laughably tiny in comparison to TW Steel, Panerai etc, so won't get a second glance from most people.

I found the black Calf Leather strap rather bland, the matt finish looks quite cheap IMHO, even synthetic. I'd change for a strap more suited to a dress watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Promising, 19 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I usually wear Ultimate Ears Triple fi 10 with my iPhone 4S, but those leave you scrambling when it rings as there's no microphone on the cable.

At the new low price of £80, I thought I'd give these a go as they are compatible with the iPhone as they have mic, plus control buttons, on the cable.

Box and presentation was good, with the earbuds coming with numerous tips, carrying pouch, 6mm adaptor and, rather oddly, a carabiner I suppose to hook the pouch to a belt.

The 3.5mm connector is the right-angle sort, so the cable ends up parallel to the top of the iPhone. Unlike the Ultimate Ears Triple fi 10, you can't replace the cable with one of your own choosing.

Out the box, the sound of the AH-C400 was definitely 'toppy'. I swapped the factory fitted soft tips with the supplied Comply Isolation Plus tips and that extended the bass quite a bit.

The thickish cable is sold as 'no tangle' which is true enough, but it's very microphonic and tapping the cable or turning your head gives a low rumble.

Wearing the AH-C400 is easier than the Ultimate Ears Triple fi 10 which I found had to have the cable looped over the ear or would fall out in a jiffy. The AH-C400 are possibly lighter and/or don't stick out so much and feel secure enough.

With iPhone, a long press on the control button starts Siri and you can then name who do dial.

I'm going to run in the AH-C400 for a few hours before making a comparison to Ultimate Ears Triple fi 10 sound quality.
