Not keen on transliteration, 21 Oct. 2012
No problems with installation on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
The main Learning System section uses only transliterated Chinese (pinyin) and Japanese (romaji) which I do not like, so I have not really used those sections. This approach has some limited use for complete beginners but ideally you want to be using the native scripts as soon as possible, particularly for Japanese.
The flashcards are available in both transliterated and Chinese/Japanese script, these are more useful and cover a wide range of topics. The audio for the flashcards is not great but is functional, you have the option to slow it down but I didn't think that made much difference. There is no form of spaced repetition in this version which is a shame. I was able to input characters using the Windows IME, there are instructions in the User Guide for how to install this in XP and Vista and you can find instructions online for Windows 7.
The iPod files are just the flashcards with audio minus the revision program, I don't have an iPod so I don't know how well they work. The audio CD is of good quality and covers some basic phrases well but is only an hour long so won't take you very far.
I would recommend buying the Version 2 if you are interested in reading Chinese/Japanese script as the later version has these in the learning environment, it also includes an updated version of the flashcard software which has more features.
