I don't normally like gangster films but this one is very atmospheric. The settings in Newcastle help - and the jazz references.

Price: £4.70

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT DUKE BUT STILL EXCELLENT JAZZ!, 18 Nov 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A lovely mix of hokum and straight ahead jazz. You can see why the Goons chose him. Ray Nance is an unexpected bonus - he must have liked playing with guys called Ellington! Exceeded my expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gives a good overview of the various schools of jazz, 16 Oct 2014

Informative stroll down memory lane. Gives a good overview of the various schools of jazz. Coverage of fans as well as players rings true for the part I was around. Especially pleased to read the bit about jazz and the Goon Show!

Farming adventure: a thousand miles through England on a horse
Farming adventure: a thousand miles through England on a horse
by J. Wentworth Day
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars BYGONE EAST ANGLIA, 1 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
He may have been far too right wing, but James Wentworth Day had a deep love of East Anglia and delved below its surface. His writings are classics and still worth reading today.

4.0 out of 5 stars MEMORABLE NONSENSE, 1 Sep 2013

This review is from: Mars Attacks! [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
Not exactly demanding intellectually, but it's FUN! The Martian defeating weapon (C & W yodelling) is a master stroke. Lots of well known stars including Tom Jones as himself. Just think: Sex and the City might have been 3 girls and a dog!

The House of Cards Trilogy [1990] [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars A POLITICAL THRILLER, 1 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A classic political tale, brilliant of its genre with a superb performance by Ian Richardson as hero/villain Francis Urquhart. Not something I would normally buy but this is true quality. I may say that, but I realise you couldn't possibly comment!

4.0 out of 5 stars FOR NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BUFFS, 1 Sep 2013

...................of whom I am one. I can't be fully objective about Ken Colyer as he was part of my growing up. A good tribute, hampered a little by German dubbing. But it's still the Guvnor.

4.0 out of 5 stars RADIOTELESCOPES AS MOVIE STARS?, 1 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Dish [DVD] (DVD)
A charming tale from Oz, with an unlikely theme (tracking the American moonshot in 1969). Pity its star got wiped out in Neighbours ((he was Harold's son).

Wages Of Fear [DVD] [1955]
Wages Of Fear [DVD] [1955]

4.0 out of 5 stars OLD BUT THRILLING, 1 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wages Of Fear [DVD] [1955] (DVD)
I saw this in the cinema when I was at school, and it's still every bit as thrilling as we follow two lorries carrying nitro glycerine through the jungle. No doubt a re-make would use lots of CGI and be rubbish by comparison! Well done you Frenchmen.

Engines of War: How Wars Were Won and Lost on the Railways
Engines of War: How Wars Were Won and Lost on the Railways
by Christian Wolmar
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS I HOPED, 1 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was a bit disappointed - and surprised by this. Not sure just why: the topic interests me from two angles. Was it the writing style? I don't know. Christian Wolmar knows his subject but to me it didn't come across.
