5.0 out of 5 stars Flowing Folk, 25 Dec. 2008
This review is from: Leaves in the River (Audio CD)
A beautiful flowing album that rises and falls like the tides of the river in the title. Soft singing melds pleasantly with traditional instrumentation and carries you along on a journey blowing like the wind. At times the lyrics are slightly naive but as an album this is above many others both past and present and is a good choice for a new listener to folk music.

3.0 out of 5 stars Under par, 20 Aug. 2008
This review is from: Sings Live! (Audio CD)
As a fan i expected the latest Colin Meloy solo outing to live up to previous efforts and possibly even Decemberists heights, however, i was slightly disappointed in these aspects. The album itself is a rehash more than a new album with only 3 or 4 new songs and the rest being taken from Decemberists or previous solo albums. The attempts at crowd interaction are difficult to pick up from the CD and the songs don't quite run into each other as was probably intended.
Although this is the case the album is not a washout, certainly not even close. The songs in themselves are once again beautifully played and sung by Colin including acoustic versions of 'On The Bus Mall' and 'We Both Go Down Together'. Added to solo songs such as Devil's Elbow' and 'Wonder' the album dusts itself off and becomes above average once again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Laborious yet entertaining, 20 Aug. 2008
This review is from: Darkly Dreaming Dexter (Paperback)
As a story and an idea this is a book that leaves many others trailing in its wake. However, where other books catch up and surpass this one is through the writing itself.
A serial killer with a difference is a novel and original idea yet a difficult one also as there are many roads to be chosen and much to explain. This story moves at varying paces throughout and often leaves a lot of confusion and questioning. Scenes of suspense often take too long to be acted out yet scenes of monotonous unimportance take quite the opposite. Character interaction is below par, even for Dexter himself, who of course needs little and many possible avenues of investigation go overlooked. From this I would also say that the book itself is far too short and would be much better placed as a longer novel.
Despite this it cannot be denied that the story as a whole is a good read and if you have the time it is a book which should be tried by everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another top album, 15 Mar. 2008
Louis XIV are generally an unknown quantity outside of their native USA but hopefully this album will finally change that.

An album that changes rhythms without a care for the listener is of the same attitude as the band themselves as they create a dirty sound for the majority of the tracks. The first track on the album is one of the best as you are thrown straight into a rock song of the same kind as the last album, then followed by a distinct change of tune as 'Air Traffic Control' (also a single release) is a slower, slightly more morose journey through trials and tribulations of an emergency aeroplane landing.

The album then continues in this vein, moving from rock to melody to create a tense yet exciting atmosphere. A must for those who enjoy a more alternative rock sound but is quite an acquired taste so don't be put off by a confused first listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up, 15 Mar. 2008

After listening to the first Thirteen Senses album i always wondered how their second would compare. Middle of the road as a lot are, fade into obscurity?...

The answer is no, the second album is every bit as good as, if not better than the first. Whether you are a fan of soft rock, melodic pop or simple chill out songs this album is for you. Each song is ripe with emotion and a dark, chilling soul waiting to be let out. Soft rock fans will enjoy the similarities to Coldplay though with a better vocal presence and all should enjoy the simple yet well-layered rhythms of the music as a whole.

How this band can have stayed under the radar for so long is a mystery as less talented bands have risen and fallen around them. Anyone thinking of buying this album should do so with no worries about any kind of let down at all. A 5-star album all around.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Purchase, 11 Dec. 2006
As a first year university student i was looking for a cheap alternative solution to where to store my data and came upon this external hard-drive on amazon. The price for such a large amount of memory did make me slightly wary but once it arrived there were no problems whatsoever.

The set-up disk autoloads and has extremely easy to follow instructions along with a handy google toolbar option and picasa 2 to keep track of all of my photos too. Probably the best purchase i have made this year and any other electrical goods will have a hard act following this.

Also, it arrived within 24 hours although i didn't pay for next day delivery. A great purchase all round and a great product too. I would recommend this product to anyone thinking of purchasing one.
