4.0 out of 5 stars A collection of essays and speeches, 29 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Provides some nice insight into the thinking of HCM. I was looking for a more deep analysis of his philosophy though. This book is mostly just a collection of HCM's essays.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for native english speakers, 29 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a good book if you are already good at english. It will teach you about the finer points of writing good sentences. It's definitely helped me look at sentences differently and I think I should be able to write better now. That said, it does get a bit rambly and the later chapters seemed to be tacked on just to fill out the book.

My Philosophy For Successful Living
My Philosophy For Successful Living
by Jim Rohn
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

4.0 out of 5 stars small book, easy to read, 29 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's exactly what the title says: a summary of Jim Rohn's ideas for living the good life. It's not as comprehensive as other self-help books and doesn't have any practical exercises, but it's a nice supplement to any self-help library. Buy it if you are a fan of Jim Rohn.

The Rough Guide to the Music of Vietnam
The Rough Guide to the Music of Vietnam
Price: £7.99

3.0 out of 5 stars A good teaser for traditional vietnamese music, 12 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It doesn't have any of the big name stars or classic tunes of Vietnam, but the sound is still quinessentially vietnamese. A worthy purchase and probably still the best "variety" collection of vietnamese music.

Stop Working and Start Thinking: A Guide to Becoming a Scientist
Stop Working and Start Thinking: A Guide to Becoming a Scientist
by Jack Cohen
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars A light, but serious, read., 12 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This one takes a light-hearted approach to critical thinking, research design and problem solving. Read it if you want a quirky refresher on research or just a gentle introduction. It is aimed at the graduate level or early career researcher who is still figuring things out. It doesn't take too much strain to read, but has valuable tidbits that you will find useful if you are attempting any type of research.

Phenomenology and Psychological Research
Phenomenology and Psychological Research

4.0 out of 5 stars A rare book, 12 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I would recommend this for your library simply because it is one of the only books available on descriptive phenomenology. Nowadays, you could probably get a better curated collection by doing your own review of journals, but it's rare to find a 'book' on just phenomenology. Apart from that, another good thing is the arguments presented are just as fresh now as they were when first written.

5.0 out of 5 stars For historical purposes only, 12 Nov 2012

The content of this book is somewhat outdated, but it's a foundational book, so buy it for the historical value.

True Love: A Practice for Awakening the Heart
True Love: A Practice for Awakening the Heart

4.0 out of 5 stars Small book, simple message, 12 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very short book; it can be read within an hour. The message is also very simple; we should love unconditionally, which is based on the philosophy of non-attachment and mindfulness. Thich Nhat Hanh applies core buddhist concepts and applies it to romantic love. It is sound advice and will probably help in any type of relationship. The only thing is the book is brief, so don't expect a long read.

Heidegger's Being and Time (Edinburgh Philosophical Guides): An Edinburgh Philosophical Guide
Heidegger's Being and Time (Edinburgh Philosophical Guides): An Edinburgh Philosophical Guide
by William Large

4.0 out of 5 stars Allows you to 'get' the main ideas without tackling the original B&T, 29 Nov 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I haven't read the original Being and Time yet, but I think this companion guide covers most (if not all) of the key ideas. The chapter with the historical context is very useful too since the ideas are more powerful when you consider the circumstance under which they came about.

This book and the ideas are not easy to comprehend though. It required very close reading to fully grasp the concepts. I am not even sure now if I'll be able to understand the original, but with Large's explanations, it should be a lot easier. I am glad I bought the book.

Qualitative Research: Theory, Method and Practice
Qualitative Research: Theory, Method and Practice
by David Silverman
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for qualitative researchers, 29 Nov 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Silverman has compiled a nice collection of papers on qualitative research. Firstly, it covers a broad range of rsearch methods (observation, textual analysis, interviews). Second, they are covered in good depth, starting from the approach (how to think about it) to its practice (how to do it). But best of all, I like the values Silverman espouses in this book. It really gets you motivated to do _good_ qualitative research and gets you thinking about the right things. This book will add to your conceptual and technical 'toolkit' for conducting qualitative research.
