Another great crime novel, well written, interesting chracters and extremly dry writing, showing the dedication needed to solve a crime even more than the drama .

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 18 Jan. 2014

This review is from: A Captain's Duty (Paperback)
A very interesting read especially after seeing the film - puts certain points in what happened very clearly and relates the experience to what Captain Phillips felt. Also gives you a better idea of what all the people involved were liek and how they succeeded in finding a way out of a hugely difficult situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and well written, 18 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Luminaries (Hardcover)
Although long and involved, very well written and life like characters. Interesting historically in terms of the relationships that are formed in fairly isolated conditions but linked to earlier times and situations so you gradually discover what the individuals are like and can guess what happens to them . The story also shows why they behave as they do and so that you are reluctant for the story to come to an end even after such a long read. The pace quickens towards the end so the last part can be read much more quickly than the first. Though it might be possible to cut some passages it's hard to know exactly which ones and Eleanor Catton manages to move on just as the reader wonders when this will happen. A very godd read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A complex, fascinating and devastating read., 24 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: HHhH (Kindle Edition)
A fascinating insight into what happened when Heydrich was assassinated, the style of writing questions assumptions made when recreating factual events and puts a new perspective on how non fiction is written. Much more is revealed about the event in this book than previously known by most readers ... It is more horrific and more truthful than anyone would expect. HHHH is a book to be read and can't be forgotten.

River of Smoke (Ibis Trilogy 2)
River of Smoke (Ibis Trilogy 2)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, 26 July 2011
I loved reading River of Smoke which moves first to those on the slave/opium ship in Mauritius and then, the remainder of the book, to Canton & Hong Kong where most of the action takes place.
it is a fascinating story, the characters are vividly drawn and even if it takes a while to link all of them with the first book, that really doesn't matter. In fact each book can be read independently of the other as well. It is very interesting to have an insight into how the English East India Company saw their markets in the East and how much Indians themselves were involved. The relationships between the characters are very well drawn so you feel you know them and the issues of the day that are involved. Local attitudes to the conditions of the day are seen through the eyes of everyone who is there so a very good picture is revealed of what went on from various points of view.

I'm now looking forward to reading the third novel in the trilogy.

A South Indian Journey: The Smile of Murugan

4.0 out of 5 stars A South Indian Journey, The Smile of Murugan, 1 Mar. 2011
Michael Wood's early description of his journey to the Temples and countryside of Tamil Nadu in South India is an excellent way of getting to know the area and what is behind their way of life .
It is very fascinating to read how involved he and his family become involved in understanding this part of the world and it can only be highly reommended as an introduction to this very rich and interesting part of India where each area has its own history, religion or religious mix and way of life. Although it was writen some time ago it is still an excellent and enjoyable place to start.

BRITA Maxtra Water Filter Cartridge - 8 Pack
BRITA Maxtra Water Filter Cartridge - 8 Pack
Price: £28.04

5.0 out of 5 stars Brita Kettle with filter, 15 Jan. 2011
i ordered a Brita filter kettle which I enjoy using a lot though I think it needs new filters more quickly than when using a jug filter.
The reader on the top tells yu when a new filter is needed so you do keep it up to date effectively. London water is very hard and needs a filter Breville VKJ097 Brushed Stainless Steel Brita Filter Jug Kettle
the kettle needs the water wiped off as it is filled or the lime makes a mark where it remains. The jug kettles saves counter space and boils
quickly and quietly so all in all I'd recommend it.
