5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, A Man Does Fly - BLU RAY Review, 22 Feb. 2015
I often think that the 'airplane catch' in Superman Returns is easily one of the best 'Superhero' moments on any film of the genre. But the rest of the film just felt like watching treacle WAITING for something to ACTUALLY happen.

The old Christopher Reeve movies simply suffer now from the old style effects, the simple fact that they have dated quickly, as well as the 'Roger Moore' type degeneration into gags and basic daftness. Still a terrific 'Helicopter Catch'!

So I had bought this, then kept it on the shelf a while, just doubting how I was bound to be disappointed, but after the first ten minutes it just gets you by the scruff of the neck and keeps going. It answers so many questions that the other films just skirted. You understand why Superman struggles with anything to do with Krypton (although Kryptonite actually never makes an appearance), you know why the villians were more spoilers.

Such a treat with Russell Crowe and Costner playing the two dads, Diane Lane as his Earth mom, and Cavill makes a great Superman - I thought Brandon Routh was good, just he was held back by a slow moving story.

In this I have read the reviews about the CGI going mad, I thought it was well played. When you see Superman take a punch and fly through five or six buildings, it is like you always wanted it to be. Not going to say anymore, just watch it without the spoilers.

Good picture on Blu Ray, but what is astonishing is the score by Hans Zimmer. Yes, you want the John Williams theme, but you ain't going to get it but Zimmer gives a resounding soundtrack that never really needs a theme. One of the first soundtracks I have ever had on Blu Ray that really pounds around a 5.1 system.

Loved it, looking forward to Batman Vs Superman and then the Justice League.

You will believe.................

5.0 out of 5 stars A Master Stroke of Film Making - BLU RAY REVIEW, 2 Feb. 2015
This review is from: Rush [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
As a kid we had a few sports 70s "Superstars", Geoff Capes, Kevin Keegan, Ali, Bjorn Borg and James Hunt.

James Hunt was just a man's man and a woman's dream - for as long as he could be bothered.

The film starts with a typical Hunt moment and it's only when they start to show Lauda's back story as well that you realise this is not just about one man, and also as it turns out - apparently because Morgan wrote his screenplay to be filmed as cheaply as possible - this is not really about the racing.

In truth the two were actually much closer than the films perhaps shows, and there is the odd poetic licence, but Lauda himself was stunned at the portrayal of himself and pronounced the film 'accurate' and something he wished Hunt could have seen.

Highly charged, but character driven, the film is literally filmed cleverly and intuitively and the acting by Chris Hemsworth as Hunt and Daniel Brühl (he was the sniper in the film IN the film of Inglorius Basterds) as Lauda is incredibly convincing. Great supporting cast and a simple utter must watch for anyone into motorsports but also for anyone just interested in a good human story.

Blu Ray picture quality is A1 and deep rumbling sound that leaves you breathless. RUSH to get yours!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Curtis Box Set, 7 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I picked this up for my wife, despite us already having Love Actually and Notting Hill on DVD, but we were able to gift those to our daughter.

Everyone must know Notting Hill and Love Actually? So About Time was a newbie to us and the instant reaction was this was clearly a potential young Hugh Grant film but he was too old to make it! But Domhnall Gleeson comes into the role perfectly and even adds his own touch. The whole basis for the film is silly, yes, stand in a dark cupboard, clench your fists and go back to a point in time in your life BUT forget the time 'riddles' and just enjoy what is a truly welcome addition to the Curtis collection.

Rachel MacAdams just comes on and on in roles, and to me is the US Keira Knightly. Domhnall Gleeson is soon to be in the new Star Wars so clearly we will see more of this young chap, who to most was simply 'one of the Weasleys' from Harry Potter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now Only Need a Spitoon! Brandeen??!!, 7 Jan. 2015

Make no bones about it, this won't be for everyone. I like it, my wife adores it, and we use it to sip, straight from the jar and it is best drunk that way - almost impossible to pour it out into a glass!. Perfect in summer and winter to be honest. It has a very strong oily smell but a clean sharp taste.

I've tried some other similar and this is one of the best, although it is also worth trying

2.0 out of 5 stars It's All About The Smoke............., 4 Jan. 2015
There are 'smoked' flavours and then there are burnt and this falls closely towards the latter. Yes, some people will, and clearly do love it, but for the rest of us you need to be very careful if the smell of burnt wood is not your thing, as the taste will certainly miss you. This seems to have picked a good deal of the 'burnt oak casks' it has been stored in, but for my palate just not for the better.

The worst part? There is a REALLY good whiskey in there, just one that is lost in that smell of burnt wood and then the first 'hit' of the same when you taste. What a shame.

It does taste like something left over from a house fire. Slowly getting through it, but after a few glasses it has gone to the back of the cupboard and I might try to use it more as a mixer.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Really Missed Chance For Glory, 23 Dec. 2014

From the opening sequences a few things hit you. This film is full of Black cliched characters, the dialogue can really suck, the music seems like its from the 70s when someone thought sticking a drum kit with an orchestra worked and the flying sequences were really well done.

But the film misses a really good actor. You need Laurence Fishburne, you need Samuel L Jackson, it needed Denzel, just like Glory had Morgan Freeman. Terence Howard almost pulls it off but I had no idea WHAT Cuba Gooding Jr was trying to do: maybe the strange face he kept pulling - real Down Dog - was from the taste of the pipe he was using. Ne-Yo seems to spend the whole film copying the Grandma that Eddie Murphy did in the Nutty Professor.

Most of the others simply fight with a difficult script that really yearns to be a longer TV mini series - the whole film just feels like one of those edited hour and a half movies they used to make out of nine hour long mini series.

The flying sequences work except for one thing: ALL the actors are shot in the same way in the cockpits. It's almost as if they were simply rotated into the cockpit set in turn and no one bothered to move the camera. Often you just get the sense that it's actors saying their lines rather than actually acting, but with the turgid script it really is not surprising.

The soundtrack? If you use a full orchestra, use it, don't then stick a blinking drum kit in with it. It suits neither the period the film is set NOR matches the type of music we get today.

For a film that sets out to highlight the way black flyers were treated in the war, it makes almost EVERY white character you encounter a racist. Throw in the fact that every black flyer is characterised in the most ridiculous way possible and the biggest surprise is that the film has a black director: who really only has a lot of TV work to his credit, and it shows in the way the film does NOT feel cinematic, just somehow restricted.

I fell for the George Lucas bit, but frankly this would have been a great mini series, but instead is a mediocre film with some great CGI.

5.0 out of 5 stars A REAL Blast Of Vanilla, 9 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Old J Spiced Rum 70 cl (Grocery)
This will be weird. I am writing a review of something I did not really like and giving it Five Stars...........Before you crucify me, read on.

Tried a fair few Spiced Rums, Captain Morgan and Kraken, Barcardi Oakheart and the like. Enjoyed them all and tend to sip them straight rather than mix. They make a good summer drink with a little ice and are nice just straight in the winter to sip.

The label on this says it is based on an old recipe, but I would doubt if it matches that given the sheer blast of vanilla you get in both taste and smell. Cannot imagine many 'Jolly Tack Tars' would have been entirely raving about this replacing the rum ration - old Grog as I understand it was Rum watered down with sugar and lime juice, the latter to stop scurvy. This boasts the lime but also the vanilla that gives it such a notable smell and taste.

When I say it is not something I liked, my wife and daughter went crazy for it, hence the five stars. I can't knock it down just because it was not my 'thing' because clearly it appeals to many others and they have already confirmed it as a 'must have'.

My daughter likes it as it makes a very good 'Vanilla' Coke and my wife just enjoys it as a sipper.

So a nice idea, just be aware that if vanilla is not your 'thing' this will not convert you, but you're bound to have friends or family who will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth and Easy Drink, 8 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Over the years I have tended to steer clear of drinking whiskeys in mixed drinks, and just simply prefer them to sip, with a beer alongside or even a glass of something light.

It's often hard to get a whiskey that tastes JUST the way you want, and I have to admit I find a few of the popular brands too brash, but this is just right. A nice smooth blend, easy to drink, probably good in mixers but how would I know!

5.0 out of 5 stars Connect an XBox to A PC Monitor - Easy, 2 Nov. 2014
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Got a spare PC monitor and needed to pipe the XBox through it. Like others have said you do NOT get the boxed item as shown but it is the correct official cable in a plastic bag. Probably why it's so cheap - usually £6 for the cable and a tenner for the box!

Tried it and instantly got a picture on the monitor that was crystal clear. No sound, BUT that is because the monitor has no sound so I will pipe that through the computer speakers using which will allow the red and white connectors from this to share the PC speakers.

So for the money? A bargain. Or you can spend ages like I almost did watching useless You Tube videos by people who clearly have no clue how to connect their XBox to a monitor. Just make sure you have the correct connector at the back of the XBox as many later models are going HDMI - but then you should probably be looking at an HDMI VGA convertor instead. This one is when you have the old A/V connector slot in the back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look After Your Pans and They Will Look After You, 6 Oct. 2014
This is the second set of these pans we have bought, after we found that good as they were, WE were the ones not using them right.

You have a tendency with a frying pan to whack the heat up high and with these (we have a conduction hob) you need to put the heat midway at most, until the red spot in the middle blends into one. THEN you have the perfect cooking heat. Before we were sticking them on so high the pans just wore out.

Use a soft sponge scourer when cleaning, and never straight off the heat, and you will find they WILL last longer.

Excellent quality, but sometimes you just need to read the instructions.
