The Wooden World: Anatomy of the Georgian Navy
The Wooden World: Anatomy of the Georgian Navy
by N. A. M. Roger
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.99

5.0 out of 5 stars The real Royal Navy of the 18th Century, 28 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent book that gives a thorough insight into every aspect of the working of the British Navy, primarily at the time of the Seven Years War (1756-1763) but also throughout the rest of the century. Very well written and readable and extremely extensively researched (1/4 of the book is reference material of one sort or another), dispels all the common myths and misconceptions of the Navy during the Great Age of Sail. A great book for anyone interested in the British Navy or naval history, or anyone studying the 18th Century. Also a perfect background book for anyone interested in the Patrick O'Brian novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap, robust, perfect to handle, 6 Oct. 2014

Another smashing little 16GB USB drive, of which there are now many available for under a tenner. This offering from Kingston is encased in a lovely brushed aluminium case which is nice to hold and quite robust. The incorporated keyring hole makes it easy to handle - you won't be snapping it off by accident! Small enough but not too tiny - perfect size for plugging into television and cheaper USB ports where you sometimes have to struggle to remove smaller USB drives. Good data transfer speeds and an excellent price.

Lovely mouse, nicely weighted, good texture, responsive, well made. Several levels of DPI sensitivity, the first two cover most desktop usage and gaming needs. Not the best 'gaming' mouse on the market but for the price you should be prefectly happy with it, and it makes a lovely laptop mouse.

Star Wars: Darth Plagueis
Star Wars: Darth Plagueis
by James Luceno
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.74

4.0 out of 5 stars A well written Star Wars novel, 28 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are a lot of Star Wars novels, and a lot of them aren't particularly well written. Previous to this I had read the Thrawn trilogy, and while gripping they suffer from mediocre characterisation and an average writing style. James Luceno's novel is not only fascinating but well written and very readable.

Plagueis charts both the efforts of the titular Sith Lord to realise the revenge of the Sith, through his prodigy Darth Sidious, and his attempts at ending the rule of two by achieving immortality. His character is both fascinating and complex, and having never read any novels about the Sith before I greatly enjoyed learning about their motivations and history. Luceno paints a fascinating picture of how very driven and singular individuals are drawn to the Dark Side as a means of realising their ultimate power, and I almost found myself rooting for Plagueis at times.

Sidious on the other hand is portrayed much as he is in the films; as an exceptionally powerful man with an unpleasant past, entirely bent on becoming the most powerful being in the universe at all costs. His rise ties in very neatly with Episode I and the book acts as a very good prelude to the films.

Altogether a very enjoyable novel, great for die hard fans or a good starting point for those who have only seen the films and wish to learn more of the Star Ward universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book for Trappist beers, 27 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is primarily aimed at Trappist beers but also covers some similar styles that reflect the range of beers produced by Trappist breweries.

As the author says, this is not a step-by-step on how to clone Trappist beers and does not contain any homebrew recipes as such. In the context of complicated beers such as these, 'recipe' is in fact a misnomer; replicating the grain bill, hop schedule, water profile and buying the 'right' yeast are not enough to produce accurate replicas of these famous beers. Having said this, anyone with a passing knowledge of recipe formulation should easily be able to knock up a recipe for any of the beers listed from the info provided, which is ample.

So, instead of 'recipes' he gives you an enormous amount of information on a range of breweries and beers, and leads you through an exercise in discovering how these beers come to be. The book is packed with breakdowns of beers and commentaries and details of brewing practices, and covers every aspect of production. Many pages are also devoted to individually introducing all of the Trappist brewing monasteries as well as a select few Belgian and American breweries, and for anyone with an interest in Belgian beer these are fascinating.

This is an excellent primer on Trappist and Belgian brewing, well written and entertaining to read. It is never dry, even when discussing the minutae of brewing practice, and the author is obviously very enthusiastic about the subject,

Not as amazing as the original game, but still absolutely stunning and immensely enjoyable to play. Aesthetically the best game of the series, it creates a stunningly beautiful and stylised world to play in.

Man Walks Into A Pub: A Sociable History of Beer (Fully Updated Second Edition)
Man Walks Into A Pub: A Sociable History of Beer (Fully Updated Second Edition)
by Pete Brown
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Who ever knew we love beer so much?, 10 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Firstly Pete Brown is a great writer: very readable, amusing and insightful, you can tell he's been in print writing for many years. This book is a fascinating history and insight into not just beer in the UK (and across the world), but also our particular love for beer and the places to drink it with our friends. Every page has you discovering something new and fascinating that you didn't realise would not only be interesting, but also provide so much insight into our culture.

Connecting the little historical dots as you go along gives you a very palpable sense of discovering a hidden social history that we are all involved in but no nothing of. Yards of ale, closing time, how much we actually drink, the 'English Pub', lager and pilsner, and the ages old history of governments versus brewers, it is a fascinating book and ideal for any fan of the pub, beer and social history.
