4.0 out of 5 stars Lonely Hearts., 24 July 2014
This review is from: Her [DVD] (DVD)
People who have never been lonely would never connect with this film. I myself also expected to not like it based on the far fetched idea of a possible future reality of having a relationship with ones computer, but a upon watching i found it very touching. Joaquin Pheonix is perfectly cast & has such charisma in his portrayal of Theadore the lonely writer of other peoples lives. Obviously Scarlett Johannsens voice is instantly recognisable as Samantha, the supposedly ever evolving artificial personailty but that doesnt make her any less authentic, actually in an acting capacity, i think shes better WITHOUT the face & body to visualise! It's a meloncholy tale of inevitable unfulfilment but ironically i shed a tear for just how accurate the motions they go through appear to be, despite my cynisism of any real emotional connection a human being could experience with an electronicaly programmed voice. However over all i enjoyed the escapsm. It's effectively a sci-fi drama & has some humor too (Watch out for the dead cat!) For me worth the watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Breath Taking., 9 July 2014

I bought this for my son for his 9th birthday as he loves nature, the cinematography is jaw dropping. Being able to get so close up to living things that are so small or in the dark is fascinating, as is the vegitation lifelines you get to see as they happen, especially the Bayobab Tree top flowers which were awsome to watch. I fell in love with Blue & Frozen Planet long before i discovered this which i didnt expect to be as good, i was wrong, both series in this box are on parr. So glad children who live in urban areas can have access to seeing nature on this scale, it really puts all life into perspective.

I like this album, it's obviously a feelgood chapter of Ed Sheerans. But for me it's far more commercialised & no where near as good as his debut. I only bought this version of the album because it contains the theme song 'I See Fire' from the 2nd Hobbit film which i love & it was worth the purchase for that alone however, although the additional more up beat material still clearly displays his talent, i havent yet been able to emotionaly connect with it. Maybe it'll be a grower...

I dont fully comprehend US politics but you dont really have to to be entertained by the 'Power Over Wealth' currency this series trades on; it did take me four episodes in before my eyes widened & my ears pricked up but this is a very cleverly written, character driven slow burner. Even if the White House methodoligy gos over your head, the story itself wont. (In fact i would say this is probably one of those series that throws up clearer direction the 2nd time watched) Momentum builds around episode six when you can then antisipate Frank & Claires next move. Devilish Kevin Spacey is SUPERB but Robin Wright is also surprisingly & equally as despicable. They compliment one another perfectly. I love the way frank ritualisticaly laps up his southern ribs with every power play victory. I never thought i would be so thankful that my own life is so comparabley dull!

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw Talent., 17 Jun 2014

This is a such a great follow up to Born to Die, usually 2nd albums are never as good but i can see this winning as many positive acknowledgements as her debut did. I cant stop playing 'West Coast' & also love the title track. LDR is the perfect example of how the most emotionally damaged people can produce the most sublimely raw & expressive talent for the rest of us to pour our hearts out to.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerhouse Familial Complexitys., 17 Jun 2014

I wanted to hate this film, it starts off so boring until you reach the family funeral dinner when all my detest of Julia Roberts sedate acting career flew straight out the window. I did expect Meryl Streep to steel the show (& boy does she make a bloody good attempt to) but hats off to JR for totally changing my opinion of her acting ability. The dynamics between the mother & elder daughter characters is heartbrakingly authentic, as is the bitter sweetness between the all three sisters. I thought MY family was controversional.... Stick with this movie if you appreciate a good storyline, you will cry your eye balls out....

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark Paradise., 16 Jun 2014
I was entertained thouroughly by this but i had to watch it in two halfs as i found it, as with most of scorcesses films way too long; Never have i laughed so much as in the scene where LDCs character has taken a drug 15yrs out of date & gets a delayed fast pass straight to what is described as the 'cerabal palsy stage' ;-) If you are easily repulsed by all that is depraved within the human condition then dont watch this but if you have a thicker skin than most & can see the funny side of greed & indulgence then you may well enjoy it. Although in my apinion, this isnt one of scorcesses best works, I would say Leo was defeninatly robbed of an acknowledgement for his performance in this film...

This is a brief album compared to others Coldplay have done previously but simply & clearly emotional intelect always inspires a masterpiece in art. I cant stop listening to this... it's methodical simplistic melodys are haunting & morish (as per usual with Coldplay) but there is ALWAYS one particular track that makes you jump up & down like a lunatic & on this album that song is without a doubt 'A Sky Full of Stars'...get ready to enjoy easily the summer anthem for 2014 ;-)

2.0 out of 5 stars Creepy Carrie Crucified., 2 May 2014
This review is from: Carrie [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
This remake is sadly the shambles i expected it to be; To start with the lead role was VERY badly cast, Cloe Grace Moretz gives an utterly unconvincing performance as the supposed-to-be unattractive, socially isolated teen misfit. She is simply awful as Carrie... not a patch on Sissy Spacek who did the original movie. Julianne Moore holds her own as the religeously distorted & abusive mother but again could not hold a candle to Piper Laurie's performance & is dissapointingly average for her. The character chemistry is virtually non-existent. The only vaguely authentic role is played by Judy Greer, the PE teacher who trys to mentor Carrie; This was meant to be an updated take on bully culture but the script was barely adjusted to fit the modernised events. The mean bitches that bully Carrie arent even worthy of Carrie's response at the end in the notorious prom horror scene. "they're all gonna laugh at you" is what somebody should have warned the atrocious director of this criminal crucifixtion of a classic horror film.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh Dear..., 22 April 2014
This review is from: Bronson [DVD] (DVD)
I think alot of Tom Hardy but this was an absolute tragedy to add to his C.V. The film has no substance what so ever to it, its just mindless gratuatous violence & serves no purpose even to illustrate insanity; If this is the real story of Charlie Bronson's life then prepare yourself for disappointment.
