5.0 out of 5 stars An engaging read into a challenging area, 29 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was deeply impressed by Francisco Varela during a seminar where he offered his views on the necessary pre-conditions for a thought to arise, and this book continues the journey towards understanding the relationship between though and action. A must read for those interested in either the science or the experience of "reality".

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthy tribute to Don Juan Matus, 29 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A welcome and useful guide to the work of Carlos Castaneda and in particular an appropriate acknowledgement of the impeccable actions of the Nagual Don Juan Matus. A must read book for those interested and inspired by Castaneda's writing and a useful book for those exploring the spiritual world that includes shamanism.

Sleeping, Dreaming, and Dying: An Exploration of Consciousness
Sleeping, Dreaming, and Dying: An Exploration of Consciousness
by Francisco J. Varela
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A profound step in understanding consciousness, 29 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I enjoyed reading this book as the group explore and share their understanding of consciousness. The high point is the Dalai Lama's explication of the most profound aspects of Tibetan philosophy which Varela rightly encourages you to read carefully and read again. I felt this was an informative mixture of academic research and experience that offers any interested party a valuable insight into this field.

3.0 out of 5 stars Academically relevant, experientially deficient, 29 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A solid academic work that provides a great deal of data about the brain and functions. What causes me to offer a paltry 3 stars is the lack of personal experience that would demonstrate familiarity with right hemisphere functioning. Whilst descriptions of music, art and creative occupations offer evidence for right hemisphere functions the challenge lies in expressing how this presents itself and exasperates scientific research and validation methods. An example of this may be sensed in the dialogue between David Bohm and J Krishnamurti in their book "The ending of time" where, for me at least, my sense is that Bohm is gasping for air to keep up with Krishnamurti as he drops a thought and takes a new thread to explore understanding. I am sure Iain's book will be a must for left hemisphere biased readers and a challenge for others as they plough through the extensive data to find any personal experience that authenticates knowledge of right hemisphere operation .

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tuner for multi-skilled and orchestral musicians, 10 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A good and professional piece of kit for tuning musical instruments. Very accurate and probably best for a professional or very serious musician. I needed a tuner for playing different lutes and stringed instruments and found this exceeded my needs but have only scored it 4 stars because for a lesser musical mortal with simpler needs the Seiko SAT1200 better met my personal needs. For orchestral players I am sure this would be the preferred tool

Great sticks that fit neatly in the boot of the car and can be used for walking and skiing. Very light and the different end fittings make it very adaptable.
