4.0 out of 5 stars Relief to have something analogue, 29 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Watching the humidity variation was really an eye opener. Particularly in association with an indicator of barometric pressure (which I already had). I have heard it said that when the pressure goes down the humidity goes up; but this did not seem to be the case. There has been far more variation of humidity than of pressure. There didn't seem to be any correlation between humidity and my aches and pains. The appearance of the instrument is attractive. I did not give it 5 stars because its accompanying notice was rather weak; I would have liked to have known to what extent the artificial hair was sensitive to temperature and if so, had this been allowed for?.

How could anything with Cher as the star be anything but four or five star? And the eldest daughter was enchanting too.

Maybe MAGNINI is an excellent actress but the environment of this film is so unremittingly without anything pleasant that her talents are wasted. Her son, on whom she dotes, is without redeeming features.

4.0 out of 5 stars what a funny face!, 12 Aug. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Funny Girl was the first film of Barbra Streisland that I've watched; I was absolutely besotted by her face and feisty character. I enjoyed the Hollywood glitz too and the dancing girls; as well Omar Shirif was an excellent male lead. The face was still great in Funny Lady but I found the feisty character a bit wearing and the male lead was rather weak. So whereas I would give Girl 5 stars to my mind the two together merit only 4. I suppose this is partly because I found Lady a bit of a repeat of Girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars unlikely but amusing, 28 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Holiday (Paperback)
The holiday was a home swop over Christmas between Kate Winslett and Cameron Diaz, between homes respectively in rural England and California. I can't believe it could actually happen but that's beside the point. Each are fazed by the new environment but it works out well for each ....and romantically too. And there are young children enjoying Christmas and a New Year's Eve party with them too, so one feels all soppy and sentimental. This was the first time I've watched Cameron Diaz and I was quite taken; so I then watched her in The Sweetest Thing but that quite turned me off. Jude Law was impressive too.

Sleeping Arrangements
Sleeping Arrangements
by Sophie Kinsella
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Zany but enthralling, 12 July 2011
This review is from: Sleeping Arrangements (Paperback)
This was the first Sophie Kinsella that I read and I thought it brilliant. I've read a number since and except for Undomestic Goddess none have quite come up to this level of enjoyment. It tells the story of two dissimilar couples who are double-booked at a villa in Italy, dissimilar but who have had previous amorous contact.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor casting, 12 July 2011

This review is from: The Aviator [DVD] (DVD)
I was very interested to learn about the career of Howard Hughes and his flawed genius but dismayed to find he was played by someone (diCaprio) who looked like a teenager; it just wasn't credible that someone looking as young as that could have the necessary experience to design the planes that he did, sometimes it seems out of the top of his head. But the film was saved by the brilliant performance of Cate Blanchett (playing Katherine Hepburn) and the shots of aeroplanes.

Any Human Heart (Penguin Celebrations)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Life Often Scurrilous, 27 Feb. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book kept my attention throughout its appreciable length; it is essentially an imaginary autobiography which presumably owes much to the author's character though not I would think his life. It runs from the age of 17 to 85 through a succession of sub plots of which the common characteristics are sexual frankness and freedom combined with an underlying basic decency. But I question his depiction of life in one's eighties -- not my experience!

This review is from: The Camomile Lawn [DVD] (DVD)
I enjoyed this DVD of Mary Wesley's Camomile Lawn very much more than the book, presumably greatly to the credit of its Director Peter Hall but also to the strong cast. All are good but of particular note are Felicity Kendall who gives a tremendous performance, the eye-pleasing Jennifer Ehle whether clothed or not, her sensible counterpart Tara Fitzgerald, similarly eye-pleasing but in a quieter way, and Rebecca Hall as the juvenile star. And of course there is the coast of Cornwall - contrasting with scenes of London in the blitz with a memorable scene of Tara and Rebecca on the phone to Cornwall from under a table while near-hit bombs (and the ceiling) were falling. Its the sort of film that lives with you for days after the viewing and which you want to go back to and relish.
