Good scenes, disappointing story, 9 Mar 2010
I bought this film hoping for something historically accurate with a good storyline, and in particular because my grandfather fought at Passchendaele and it has become a subject of personal interest.
The story boils down to a run of the mill love-story: the returning hero and the caring nurse. All the way through it felt like a typical John Wayne type of war movie, with lots of convenient "farfetchedness". Details of the third Battle of Ypres of which Passchendaele was part are very sketchy, and there is nothing rewarding here to increase your knowledge of the events.
However, the battle scenes are extemely well produced, even if they unfortunately take up only a small amount of the film towards the end. These scenes make the film worthwhile - the love story doesn't.
