You will enter a forgotten world that was the theater of the absurd. A world like our own… intelligently stupid!

1.0 out of 5 stars A show-off, 18 May 2014

That's a pity: talking about degeneration (which is a fact in Europe) needs carefulness. Not a TV show-off, dear Niall.

The Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age
The Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age
by Sven Birkerts
Edition: Paperback
Price: 9.56

5.0 out of 5 stars NO FATE, 18 Aug 2013

The Gutenberg era is dead. The Electronic era is here to stay. It's a new world we have to face. If you have children, they belong to the "Downloading" generation. I suggest you read this book first, if you want to understand how far away your children navigate in an ocean of unknown past and stormy future. Sven Birkerts is the best navigator and he deserves our appreciation.

This review is from: The Culture We Deserve (Paperback)
Jacques Barzun is an outstanding "universalist". His opinions are the result of a long-term thinking on culture and civilization. He lived long enough (he died aged 105 years) to understand that the efforts of a whole life need to be summarized in basic concepts and ideas. This is what is important now. Because the Culture we deserve is not the culture we are living in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be careful: you need a a dog for falling in love!, 14 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A short text, a long story
Typical Russian cinema, careful in the details, focusing on faces that express strong feelings.
The "lady" is the right beauty for a "sinful" love thanks to the dog. The "sin" falls on the dog!

Reappraisals: Reflections on the Forgotten Twentieth Century
Reappraisals: Reflections on the Forgotten Twentieth Century

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much, 23 Sep 2010
Judt's writing capabilities are outstanding. His ego is blown up in his texts. Reading his "Reappraisals" you enter into a whirlwind you enjoy at the beginning. As you step further, you cannot stand such a force. This means that you abandon the book and you try to relax. I confess I didn't know Judt's works. After studying most of them, I am not sure he is the "genius" people are talking about. He is a robust mind, but this is not enough.
